Before Whitney Houston, before affected "R'n'B" singers of contemporary chart fame, there was Gladys Knight, and she sure could sing. As the previous reviewer has pointed out, hers was a sweet, yet ballsy, rootsy soul. Check out cuts such as "Make Yours A Happy Home"; "Come Back And Finish What You Started" and "Bourgie Bourgie" for proof. Of course, the album's highlight is the iconic "Midnight Train To Georgia" with its wonderful horn intro, bass line, keyboards and Gladys' memorable fade-out vocal. There is also the sublime "Help Me Make It Through The Night", "The Way We Were" and my own personal favourite ballad of hers, "So Sad The Song". Add to that the James Bond theme "License To Kill" and you have a great compliation from one of the ... Read More:

Although not as widely popular in the U.S. as in England, 5 Star managed to score several hits. Most U.S. audiences first became aware of them from "All Fall Down", which hit the R&B and dance charts. "Can't Wait Another Minute" and "If I Say Yes" are prime examples of Brit-Pop at it's finest. Why they never became super huge here is still a mystery.

Until this very day to say I wasn't a Lighthouse Family fan would have been a complete understatement. I have just bought this greatest hits collection of theirs and I'm astonished at how good they are. 'Lifted' is just the perfect song to listen to. 'Ocean Drive' keeps up the standard and I also adore 'Raincloud'.
This is a sublime album and whatever style of music you're into it's bound to impress - the thoughtful lyrics and fantastic melodies are a winning combination.

Funkin' good music that sparkles from the opening track to the last. If you have a hankering for soul and blues you should check out this album. The classic combination of horns and twangy guitar will have your foot tapping out the rythm. I'm sold.

This has to be one of my absolute favourite albums of recent months. It's Will Holland at his absolute best. Even if you're not familiar with this man's work, I defy you not to like this!!

Unlike the other reviewers I AM old enough to remember Barry White the first time around though I too enjoyed Ally McBeal.
BW first got into music as a musician & later as a talent spotter for record companies & then moving into the production side.
His first big hit was Love Unlimited's "Walking In The Rain" which featured BW speaking on the telephone to his girl friend.
Right from this early track (which charted in both the UK & the USA in the early 70s) the BW 'sound' could be heard: romantic strings, slushy vocals over a strong rhythm.
This album doesn't stray from the sound at all, all the tracks feature the same kind of voice (bar the 2 instrumentals), similar sounding songs & very similar arrangements. ... Read More:

The GREATEST SINGER EVER !!!! There are many great singers in this world but Aretha's in a class no one can top. My Elite List (which includes Aaron Neville and other legends) has Aretha at the TOP !!!
That voice is from a place none of us will ever get to. Angels blessed Aretha's vocal chords and went back and blessed them again. This album has so many unbelievable classic songs. Aretha is one of my heroes. If I could sing like her for the day it would be a dream.
An outstanding album. Listen with amazement. Enjoy every second. You will love every song. Aretha...THANK YOU SO MUCH. Your voice lifts my spirit and to be in your presence would be a dream.

This cd deserves more than 5 stars. Forty great tracks from one of the greatest singers of all time. Otis Redding was a great influence on the likes of Paul Rodgers. What a tragedy he died so young.

There's no doubting the quality of the material on this best of EWF. Fantasy,Let groove,Boogie wonderland,After the love has gone..all the big hits are here, yet this album is missing loads more classic EWF songs that could have made this a 5 star album..i only knocked a star off coz of the glaring ommisions on this. Oddly, Shining star which was one of their biggest hits is stangely absent and what about Serpentine fire,Loves holiday,Loves magic,Lady sun,A song in my heart,Take it to the sky,You,Getaway,Something special and so on!! I hope one day someone will release an antology which will do the band justice. If your new to EWF then this is a good introduction..as i said all the big hits bar one or two are here but if you like the bulk of this CD then i urge you to check out the following albums ...
