In this CD, these two music giants have produced a wealth of music for us to enjoy for decades to come and probably for ever. The harmoney between them was natural and smooth. Remember, they recorded it in early sixties without a good deal of rehearsal, both were in New York after a long tours, especially Louis who has just ended an international tour to Europe and africa. It was a rare opportunity for them to meet and play together what I call super jazz like Dukes'place, cotton tail, mood indigo, Azelea. No,it's not my way to overpraise things,but this is just magnificent!Packaging is superb,a lovely strong box,containing two hardbacked books,one with very good info.,the other with the discs securely held inside.As for the sound restoration,well,it's brilliant,much the best I've come across,and the recordings,both from records and radio broadcasts,come up like new.This is the first time RCA and Columbia recordings of Frank have been cheek by jowl in this manner,allowing comparison with these (dare I say?)masterpieces.Yes,they are.We all know and value the Capitol recorings,but these reflect a more earnest Sinatra,not yet the assured older man,but the voice of a younger master.It's easy to see why the girls all screamed,these are the beginning,the ... Despite being sub-titled 40 greatest hits, this compilation (brilliant though it is) does not include Pistol packing mama, Don't fence me in or Hot time in the town of Berlin, which were three of their biggest hits with Bing Crosby, nor does it include Ferryboat serenade, I can dream can't I, I wanna be loved or I'll be with you in apple blossom time.

However, as these brilliant sisters clocked up well over 100 hits in the American charts, no compilation could possibly contain all of them and the omission of some obvious songs (available elsewhere) leaves more room for some of their other hits that sometimes get overlooked but which are also interesting.

To many people's minds, this is the last of the "classic" recordings of the Buddy Rich Orchestra (even diehard fans find some of the intervening late 70s output a little hard to love). To others this takes a step or two too far towards keeping up with the times: Steve Marcus' soprano sax can sound a touch TV soundtrack-ish (shades of Starsky and Hutch...) as do some of the keyboards, and there are four lamentable notes on an electronic Syndrum to embarrass us all (Buddy sometimes placed novelty items of kit to the left of his hi-hat with which to delight or horrify traditionalists).
