Yes, before Robert Plant and Alison Kraus made it trendy, J Paul Jones produced this album of acoustic country style music. I say "country" but it's not that straightforward to classify. Anyway, if you want to hear some well recorded acoustic music you can't go wrong.

I was facing a long car journey with a friend a few weeks back. Luckily he had 2 recent purchases with him - No Other and Pacific Ocean Blue (Dennis Wilson). I have to say that the miles flew by listening to both those wonderful albums. There is a reason why No Other has consistent 5-star reviews here and Pacific Ocean Blue is not far off. The mention above of Gram Parsons'"Cosmic American Music" sums it up. This album really does capture the essence of what can make American (West Coast) music great.

I was facing a long car journey with a friend a few weeks back. Luckily he had 2 recent purchases with him - No Other and Pacific Ocean Blue (Dennis Wilson). The Punch Brothers

This is one of those albums that stays in your CD player for weeks after you buy it. The structure of the four part "Blind Leaving the Blind" is astounding. The whole album feels like it will never stop moving - the songs melt into each other. I can't describe it! If you liked his Nickel Creek stuff and his other albums like "Deceiver" and "Not All Who Wander Are Lost" you'll love this :) If you've never heard him before start perhaps with Nickel Creek's "Why should the Fire Die?"

Cracking stuff :)Buy it and support one of the greatest living artists of our time!

Shaken By a Low Sound

Well, this one is different! I've always loved cello music, whether by Jacqueline du Pre, Julian LLoyd Webber, or indeed,on Albert Lee's lovely version of Buddy Holly's 'Learning The Game'. Crooked Still are what one might term alt. bluegrass, They clearly have a deep feel for music in the American tradition, folk, blues and bluegrass, albeit with rock overtones. Their music here is firmly built around guitar, banjo, upright bass - and the cello, where the fiddle might be expected. Various guest musicians add excellent support. Aoife O'Donovan's breathy vocals are reminiscent of Alison Krauss, if more low-key, and throughout the harmonies here are beautiful. Renowned for her Bluegrass music and the support of her band Union Station Alison Krauss followed up her amazing album So Long So Wrong with something a little different.

This album contains a collection of mostly Pop standards a good number of which have been done before, but none so beautifully. Most members of Union Station are present on this album but merely as musicians and they show of their full musical diverstiy with the use of more modern instruments and a drum kit.

Alison's voice is as amazing as ever and she makes each and every track her own.

For me the stand out track is the Todd Rundgren Classic, "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference," a song also covered by Manhatten Transfer, but the version here just blows ... Read More:

With so many singers around these days, it is rare to find one that is truly distinctive, but Vince's superb tenor voice is unlike any other in country music. This collection covers the period from 1990 to 1993, when he was at the peak of his career. Actually, his peak lasted a little longer - one more album (When love finds you), after which Vince continued to make great albums without ever achieving the same level of success.

The first three tracks, Never alone, Never knew lonely and When I call your name are taken from his first MCA album, When I call your name. It is still my favorite original album of Vince's music. Shut Up and Die Like an Aviator

This live album is generally stigmatized as the nadir of Earle's output, recorded when he was at the bottom of his self-inflicted troubles and about to be dropped by his record company. That's unfair: it's true that the diction may be less than razor-sharp in places, but there are some fine performances and a real sense of occasion. The key Earle classics are here, but the highlight is an electrifying (unfortunate pun, but I can't think of a better word) version of his anti-capital punishment song, Billy Austin, given extra impact by the near-silence of his otherwise spirited Canadian audience.

This was the first Earle album I bought, and I now own the full set. Worth having.
