This 2005 release from The Rebirth is a great mix of funky, jazzy, organic soul, married with insightful, thoughtful lyrics, which are often a departure from the norm that a group of their ilk would produce. Whilst I would have had no problem with them following the tried & trusted route of their comtempories, by utilizing all things love related, I do admire artists that bring a little substance to the party.
Two songs that best emphasize this are 'Stray Away'(One of my favorite songs) & 'Shake It (Feel the same)' which deal with hard times, and not letting go of your inner-bitions. Proves the point that there is good music out there: You just have to find it.

Nickel Creek have their roots in bluegrass but their music draws on a variety of other influences including folk (especially Celtic), country and soft rock. With Alison Krauss as producer, this album mixes ballads that highlight their vocal skills with instrumentals. The regular members of the group are Sara Watkins, Sean Watkins and Chris Thile, though Scott Thile (father of Chris) plays on most of the tracks. Three songs feature Sara on lead (Out of the woods, Reasons why, The hand song) while four songs feature Chris (The lighthouse's tale, When you come back down, Sweet Afton, The fox). The other tracks are instrumentals.
The songs and instrumentals come from a variety of sources including traditional folk songs (The fox, Cuckoo's ... Read More:

On this album, the follow-up to The grass is blue, Dolly explores her musical roots further. While still essentially a bluegrass album, there are other influences here. Mountain music with a modern edge would be a more accurate description.
Dolly wrote some new songs for the album - Little sparrow, Bluer pastures, Mountain Angel and Marry me - and recorded covers of Seven Bridges Road (Eagles), Shine (Collective soul), I get a kick out of you (the often-covered Cole Porter classic), I don't believe you've met my baby (a Louvin Brothers song that Dolly previously recorded as a duet with Porter Wagoner, and which has been covered by many country singers, including Alison Krauss), A tender lie (Restless heart), In the sweet by and by and ... I'm actually in shock that this album is so good. These songs are so clever and sweet and crafted so precisely - they're written and performed perfectly, and their makers are so young! There's also a nice variety in this album - your "favourite track" may keep changing - mine did, from 'Spit On a Stranger' to 'Speak' to 'The Beauty and the Mess' to the FANTASTIC 'Green and Gray'. It's a keeper, I'll have a soft-spot for this album for life. These musicians will surely be recognised more and more as the world begins to wake up to their talent. Buy it, you'll love it!

After a couple of listens to this album I was hooked! Bluegrass and bluesy, this album will rate amongst one of the best up and coming sounds of 2008. Chris Stapleton's voice is far from traditional yet it is addictive and the musicianship is first class. Driving banjo by Richard Bailey and the cool fiddling of Tammy Rodgers coupled with her harmonies make for a startling debut album. The songs writing keeps to the bluegrass roots of murder ballards, lost loves and the like. "Sticks that made thunder" recounts bloodshed of the civil war, is a remarkable track. Would recommend thoroughly and just can't wait for the next release

I stumbled across Nickel Creek after reading a review in Mojo. American music has its justifiable critics - but to the list of creative genius that hits the right spot such as Gillian Welch, Tom Petty and Tom Waits now add Nickel Creek. Not that they're anything like those bands. But that's the point. They're like no-one and yet they touch your musical soul. They craft their music - they put what you expect in the right places and add detours into a new places without warning. If I was to sum them up I'd say the bring the influence of Alice in Chains to traditional instruments. Fabulous musicians who create music of intelligence, warmth and sublime virutuosity.
The only sad thing is that they've announced they're to split in 2007. It's a pity. ... Read More:

... and that is what is so great about it. They murder every song you love... they kidnap your favourite tunes... they hijack, joyride and burnout the ditties you thought you held so dear.
When you stop crying, it turns out everyone is laughing. Desmond Carrington played them in the seventies and I never forgot them. Awful. Fantastic.
