I like the Stones and I love raw blues and R&B but I somehow missed out on "Exile on Main Street". So, enthused by such great reviews, I was expecting something special... an earthy, pseudo-live album that, despite its origins in drug addled chaos, would grab my attention and be worth the effort of repeat listening while, on the way, delivering up some classic gems. Well I tried, but what I kept getting was a voice saying "look, matey, you could spend hours trying to get into this but the truth is it ain't that good".
Maybe, like Neil Young's "Tonight's the Night" - whose origins and chaotic structure are similar but which still grabs valued space in my music collection - you had to buy it at the time and then listen to it for many ... Read More:

Possibly the definitive Cale album, though there are other contenders, 'Okie' sees him running through a varied range of approaches without putting a foot wrong. 'Crying' and 'Cajun Moon' are intense and brooding; 'I'll Be There' and 'Everlovin' Woman' are bright and jaunty; 'Anyway The Wind Blows' is earthy, hypnotic; 'Rock And Roll Records' is an outstanding, mid-paced number; 'Precious Memories' is a beer crate singalong country item. 'I Got The Same Old Blues' is the climax that speaks for itself. Like most of Cale's alums, 'Okie' weighs in at a little over half an hour, but its intimacy wastes nothing.

From the first moment I heard this album when released the power that came out of the grooves of my record player just blew me away and over 30 years later it never fails to send shivers down my spine on every listen. Every track is fantastic I can't pick out a favourite.

Troubadour would have been appealing even if it were an instrumental album, on account of the delicious instrumental textures. Hey Baby charms the listener with its intricate guitar whilst Travelin' Light is a rhythmic up-tempo excursion with hypnotic percussion. One of the longest tracks is You Got Something, a yearning love song with brilliant instrumental interplay.
The romantic Ride Me High is a masterpiece of expressive guitar and percussion, the brief track Hold On is a slow bluesy interlude and then there's the original of Cocaine with its powerful rock guitar riffs which became a great hit for Eric Clapton. I'm A Gypsy Man has a nervous, jerky rhythmic pattern whilst The Woman That Got Away is an up-tempo blues track with impressive piano. The ... Read More:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have a vague recollection of hearing track one, "Come On", debut on Ready Steady , Go. Since then, I've been a fan of "early" Stones, previously compiled on what was the "London Sessions", but may have been renamed. It was good, and this is equally good. I guess the record company is maximising on re-issues before their fifty years is up. Then , presumably, we'll all be able to buy it all again for 99p in Woolworth's.

What can I say about Volume One of the Nuggets compilation that hasn't already been said, this album after all is still one of the most important purchases I have ever made.
The cheap price tag of this collection on its own is quite frankly daft, but with the array of quality songs from relatively unknown bands being quite literally immense on this compilation, as a starting point you can't really do much better. So in short, you have no excuse, you need to have this compilation in your collection now.
Originally compiled and released in 1972 on the Sire Record label, by Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman with help from Lenny Kaye, Nuggets is a superb gateway to the 1960's Psychedelic and Garage scenes. I play at least 5 songs from this record ... Read More:

This is by far the best and most under-rated white stripes album. it is perfect, no other words for it. not a bad song on the whole album, no slip-ups, nothing, and a brilliant album cover to enjoy looking through. the duo at their best.

I heard Bad to the Bone on the radio whilst driving in USA and just had to buy some George Thorogood. Hearing the song again for the first time years reminded me of George's fantastic set during Live Aid in 1986. When I put it on in the car I just wondered how I had got by all these years without owning this masterpiece. It's a great mix of rock a blues, like ZZTop with attitude! Buy it, enjoy it and play it loud!

From the opening salvo of "Never Make Your Move Too Soon", Joe Bonamassa leaves you in no doubt what to expect from this album: race-tuned blues of the sort people used to play when "guitar hero" was a compliment rather than a put-down. Once again he leans heavily on the souped-up Marshall-type sounds of the seventies, but only in a good way. There are some classics in the making here: his re-working of "Reconsider Baby" into a minor key is a triumph, opening it up and creating a Stairway to Heaven vibe; "Revenge of the 10-Gallon Hat" (a tribute to the late Danny Gatton) is a jaw-dropping display of country-style picking at an almost impossible speed; the title track, written by Steve Winwood and originally recorded by Blind Faith, begins with the wonderfully sinuous riff and then builds layers ...
