With respect to my fellow reviewer, this album is not really fifties blues. It was recorded in the mid-sixties and was, as other reviews describe, a fine contemporary work. And, had it been recorded this year, it would still sound current. It has a vitality and presence which passes the test of time with honours. And so, it is blues - very good blues - which does not need to be slotted into a specific era.
What a band! Four brilliant musicians at the top of their game. Has there ever been a finer drummer in blues than Fred Below? Jack Myers was a very influential bassist with a fresh approach to a classic form; Buddy Guy was in excellent form on these sessions; and Junior Wells leads them to many peaks throughout the album. He is ... Read More:

I must admit I thought I would have to defend this album, at the time it was not treated maybe as kindly as it deserved. ZZ Top hit the nail on the head so well with the early 1980's album Eliminator it was always going to be seriously hard to follow.
I'm really pleased to see the other reviewers seeing this album for its worth.
The fact the Eliminator car has evolved on the cover is no accident. This album evolved in 1980's style to a more synth space age feel. This album has a few weaker tracks but in all it's a great time peace in 1980's metal. The guitars are more fuzzy than Eliminator and the electro drums add to the feel of the time.
Sleeping Bag. This is a well chosen album opener; I love the chops ... Read More:

A disappointing selection of 2nd rate songs & performances; it should have remained in the outakes bin. And here I was, a JJ believer hoping to discover more of his great music - ah well, back to "Guitar Man" I guess !!

More AFBF material - this time from British concerts
Anyone interested in Blues will have to buy this one. I wasn't aware that the 1964 show was recorded in the UK although I suspected it might have been when a Sonny Boy clip surfaced on YouTube. The cheering that greets Howlin Wolf is extremely heartwarming - he then proceeds to lay down Smokestack Lightnin - unavailable anywhere else on film as far as I know - and Don't Laugh at Me. Lightnin Hopkins is in there too while Sugar Pie Desanto does a couple of spirited performances
Also from 1964 (but not part of the AFBF series) are two songs apiece from Muddy Waters and Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the Blues and Gospel Caravan from a now-closed railway station in Manchester. Muddy's performances ... Read More:

Like so many "Best of" collections, this one only covers one period: it does not include anything from their later work - most notably nothing from Solid. Hence the 4 stars rather than 5.
That aside it does contain some excellent stuff and is a good introduction to the Groundhogs and the genius that is Tony T S McPhee.
There is a lot of tracks from the groundbreaking Split album: Cherry Red, Split Parts 1,2 & 4, and the eponymous Groundhog. Personally I feel they sound better in context - see the excellent reviews of Split on Amazon.
So if you were into the Groundhogs in the early 70s, you may be better off buying Split & Thank Christ for the Bomb. If you found the Groundhogs later on, then this is an excellent selection from ... Read More:

Fresh Cream as well as being the debut album of powerhouse blues trio, Cream, was arguably the album which gave birth to all those blues/rock bands featuring guitar jamming soloists. It's just that Cream hit on the idea first, and probably in their short lifespan did it better than most.
Although Eric Clapton was already making a name for himself in Britain's underground scene with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, it wasn't until he joined Cream later that year (1966) that he was given a complete free rein. On 'Fresh Cream' Clapton is at his fiery best, and not on any of the other subsequent Cream or solo albums did he ever sound this good in the studio. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than on Willie Dixon's 'Spoonful'. His solo builds slowly into a real hypnotic ... Read More:

Georgie's first hit came in '64 with the John Hendricks song 'Yeh! Yeh!', which went all the way to number 1 and, in the process, knocked The Beatles off the top spot - I remember it well! This 20 track compilation, which kicks-off with that very song, was originally released by Polydor in 1980 but was re-released in '92 and, in my humble opinion, it's an absolute BLINDER.
Some of my other favourites on this 'must-have' CD include; 'Getaway' (which he wrote), 'My Girl' (produced by Denny Cordell), 'Get On The Right Track, Baby', a righteous cover of 'Ride Your Pony', a knockout version of Bobby Hebb's classic song 'Sunny', a quality workout of the Booker T & The MG's stalwart 'Green Onions', 'In The Meantime', Georgie's stonkin' take on James Brown's ' Papa's Got A Brand ...
