So many great songs on one CD. I'm sure everyone must know at least one Louis Prima song (even if they don't know it!) Just A Gigolo, Buona Sera, Jump, Jive, an' Wail, Whistle Stop, The Music Goes Round and Round!! Don't expect to sit down and listen to this one, you can't help but want to dance. Brilliant!
Release Date August 29, 1998
What can I say, except that I wholeheartedly agree with all the other reviewers! His other work is simply outstanding, but this is on another level entirely - I can't give it more than 5 stars - but I would if I could!
You may like Hendrix, Clapton, Beck and the others - but even some of them know Rory was 'The Man'!
My favourite is Whole Lot of People. The slide work on this song really does 'sing' like I've never heard since!

Ok let's get the guest star issue over with first.
Yes they are wyrdy beardie folkies but speaking as one who loves the lysergic twist this is not a bad thing. Beth Orton has a modicum of beatastic fame and has come out the other side relatively unscathed. The Espers crew know how to spook things up deliciously. Love that Cello. Devendra is just Devendra and keeps things mellow, So far so wyrd,
All of this frippery obviously keeps young Bert atuned to the contempoary ether because this is a fine album. The title song is the best one here; it is a belter and stands in my top 5 Bert tunes (I accept I have not heard all of 304 odd or something but a fair smatterring over the years.) Anyway the hairs on my neck tell me it's a goody. ... Read More:

This fabulous and very reasonably priced collection contains all The Rolling Stones' Decca (UK) and London (USA) single A- and B-sides. If they originally appeared on 45 in mono (the vast majority) they're in mono here - apart from Honky Tonk Women for some reason. The 2002 remasters finally do justice to this material on CD - they sound fabulous.
The 60s A-sides (with the arguable exception of their debut, Come On) are uniformly brilliant, surprisingly varied and superbly produced, especially after they began recording in the USA; the B-sides, with only 1 or 2 exceptions, are good to excellent. There is surprisingly little overlap with albums (especially UK ones) and where there is, several tracks are in otherwise unobtainable mono. Really, until ... Read More:

Shaman is the follow-up to the hugely successful "Supernatural". Like its predecessor, each song on the album has a different guest appearing with the band. This is a similar formula to the Jools Holland "Friends" series albums and is obviously very popular although, for me, is not ideal. This is because the album as a whole loses some of its coherency as a result of all of the different artists appearing and I prefer a more unified feel on albums.
Nothing wrong with the music mind - there's some fine songs on here - and they'll sound great when they appear on your mp3 player's random shuffle, but the album loses one star through this lack of a consistent feel.

This album was titled 'Essential' for a reason. It is an essential album for any CD collection. There are other essentials, Meat Loaf's 'Bat ot of Hell', Springsteen's 'Born in the USA', ZZ Top's 'Eliminator', and Queen's 'Greatest Hits I'. (by no means a definitive list).
It has 'Alabama', and it has 'Free Bird', and for the more seasoned southern rock fan it also has '3 Steps'. But it has so much more!
"Drifter can you make folks cry when you play and sing? Have you paid your dues, can you mourn the blues, can you bend them guitar strings?" asked David Allen Coe. Skynyrd can.
Every song tells a story, every one means something. That brings passion and honesty. You can tell that from the guitar playing, especially on the live tracks. The bend ... Read More:

This is a quite brilliant 2CD compilation at an astounding price. This compilation covers the Doctor's years on Atlantic records ATCO subsidary from the swampy voodoo of 'Gris Gris' to the third line New Orleans funk of 'Desitively Bonaroo'. The sound is pin-sharp sounding remastered to me which is a boon since some of the original CD issues of the albums covered by this compilation date from the early '90s and as a result sound a bit 'thin' in comparison. Regarding the music the most significant observation is that the 1st CD contains the ENTIRETY (!) of Dr. John's '68 masterpiece, 'Gris Gris' which suffice to say is some of the eeriest yet accessible music ever made. In addition the 1st CD contains other choice tracks from the Doctor's late 60's / early 70's "voodoo" phase taking songs ... Read More:

I hadn't listened to anything by old slow hand in years, but I saw this CD going cheap and thought "why not?". All of the tracks on here are as fresh as the day they came out. Wonderful Tonight, Layla etc have all stood the test of time. Now I can't stop listening to it!

If you want to buy just one Bo Diddley album then this is the one!
Bo Diddley was a huge influence on the British blues revolution of the sixties especially on bands such as; The Rolling Stones, The Pretty Things, The Yardbirds and The Animals, to name just a few. The lyrics of his songs were relatively simple, the secret was in the rhythm! His sound was quite unique and way ahead of it's time.
