by: Lynyrd Skynyrd

Release Date June 06, 2005
Up until fairly recently, the only Lynyrd Skynyrd songs I knew were Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama. However, after hearing some of their other songs played on Planet Rock, I purchased this album.

It's bowled me over. Yes, it could be better packaged, but the music is terrific. Wonderful southern ,laid back, witty southern rock.

Damn Right I've Got The Blues

CD-Charts > Music > Blues
by: Buddy Guy

Release Date September 18, 2004
Buddy Guy celebrates his new recording contract with Silvertone by setting out his stall from the very first track - the title which features some exceptionally fiery guitar playing and there's some lovely fluid guitar playing all over this album. As well as this facet Buddy Guy shows his softer - more "bluesier" side on "Five Long Years" and "Black Night" - the two longest tracks on the album. The album features a stellar cast of guitar greats - Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Mark Knopfler but Buddy Guy's guitar burns the brightest of them all. There's an odd cover here of "Mustang Sally" which is taken a tad slower than normal but works well. The last track - "Remembering Stevie" is in homage to the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan and is a beautiful ... Read More:

Highway 61 Revisited

CD-Charts > Music > Blues
by: Bob Dylan

Release Date March 29, 2004
I know this is supposed to be one of Dylan's best albums... but I don't think it is. Since I was born in 1978, I can't really comment on how revolutionary this record was, and I can't comment on Dylan's abandonment of folk for the new rock n' roll sound. Unlike Dylan's audience in 1965, I am unhampered by any anti rock n' roll prejudices, but I'm afraid that for me it's just a fact that Dylan's early folk albums are better than his mid 60s rock n' roll albums. I say it's a fact, but of course you know that I mean it's just my opinion. It's not a case of whether he betrayed his fans, folk music or the civil rights movement. It's just that I don't respond emotionally to the tunes on Highway 61 Revisited. I've always thought that Like A Rolling Stone was ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > Blues
by: Dr. John and the Lower 911

Release Date June 02, 2008
After the slightly disappointing "Mercenary" album this is a wellcome return to form for the good Doctor. This album sees him offering a spicey gumbo of pop, jazz, soul, funk, blues and a hint of voodoo. If you liked the "Creole moon" album then you'll love this one.Like most of his albums these days there is a sprinkling of guest stars like Eric Clapton,Willie Nelson and jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard to add to the mix.The album title gives you a clue as to the basis of the songs for this album with most of them penned by Mac himself. The pick of the album is in fact the title track "The city that..." which is a slow voodoish blues with Dr john digging deep for some real feeling and "Dream warrior" is a voodoish funk with a nice tight rhythm.Songs like "Landgrab" and "My people ... OKAY iam a massive fan of all the early stones albums..but without jones..or taylor,,nicky hopkins..or stu or even wyman..they have beome a limp boring pretentious joke..no soul..no balls..and very fake..they are in it for the money..the ego..why do they do the same songs exactly the same way every tour???its boring..its awful to see.. WHAT HAPPENED??..... we celebrate the 30th year since the stones made a great album( some girls-which isnt really that good)..and the 35 year since there last great tour 1973 australia...iam a hardcore fan, yes i love them but the reality is theyve been a limp, shtcick, conservative, boring load of rubbish for way to long..some songs done over and over agin..in bill wymans book he tellingly states that in 1977 mick started listening to awful current ... This Was

CD-Charts > Music > Blues
by: Jethro Tull

Release Date April 28, 2008
I did recollect 'This Was' as a decent if patchy album by one of my favourite bands of yesteryear - until I heard it again in this new reissue, and what a revelation it is. The band is superb with Ian's contribution nicely balanced with all the others; the superb rhythm section of Clive Bunker and Glenn Cornick, and Mick Abrahams in great form. There are some lovely jazz tinges in amongst the overall blues feel of the album that would sadly be lost on their later albums. There is a freshness and lightness of execution about this and their other early albums, that became leaden by the time they turned the guitar amps up, went a bit heavy metal and got lost in the woods of old England. Despite the always fantastic musicianship, I never really got all the elves, squirrels and celtic myth stuff ... Read More:

CD-Charts > Music > Blues
by: Bob Dylan

Release Date August 28, 2006
I don't have the same problems as all the reviewers who write vast essays on whether whatever Dylan album is supposed to be.
Because I like cover versions.I like plagiarism. And Dylan has never been too far from both areas.
The 80s would see some great albums of covers. After all Dylan is all about covers and passing other peoples' stuff off as his own work.
Like this CD-at least half of it is rewritten things.Notice Dylan is clever enough not to end up in court.
So Memphis Minnie-no longer around but how do we know where she got the melody for When the Levee breaks.
All common stock. There for anybody. And Dylan knew that in 1962

Bringing It All Back Home

CD-Charts > Music > Blues
by: Bob Dylan

Release Date March 29, 2004
This is the album which finally made Dylan accesible to the masses.Which includes me-I'd only heard of Dylan via Peter Paul & Mary and Johnny Cash but a matter of months later came the single Subterranean Homesick Blues and the first electric versions via the Byrds and the Turtles.
Dylan had gone electric after hearing House of the Rising Sun by the Animals.
His next albums were 100% per cent solid Good Time Music.
By the time of psychedelia Dylan was setting the scenes for his next music-country and more acoustic.
His first albums were only accesible if you had got into his music from this one.
And that in a nutshell is how it worked in this country
