Eric will be 65 in about three years. When I was a boy, old-age pensioners tended to stay at home wearing slippers and smoking a pipe.

Unfortunately the words to a song on this album - "Hard to Thrill" - say it all; "Nothing really moves me any more".

This is slippers and pipe music; pleasant enough, but nothing to get worked up about. For me, it's music to play whilst pottering on the Internet - reading the news, browsing Wikipedia, writing Amazon reviews, etc.

Lifeline

Lifeline is far and away Harper's weakest album. I am a great fan of all his earlier work but this is a poor album on every level. The lyrics are weak and the music borders on the sort of middle of the road dross someone like Terence Trent Darby would put out! Certainly there is no song on here that will last the test of time like "Excuse me Mr", "The will to live", "Whipping boy" or "Alone".

Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of Lifeline is that the performances are so so ordinary. Ben Harper does have a unique and wonderful voice but it sounds strained and souless here. On top of that, the over-compressed production makes it hard on the ears.

Icky Thump

This is a damned fine album. I mean, notwithstanding the fact that it's 'Ecky and not Icky Thump, added to the fact that I am slightly bored with the concept of The White Stripes and wasn't exactly excited to hear that Jack & Meg were releasing a new album in 2007, the content of this album - or at least the majority of it - has won me over. There are plenty of songs on this album that would easily fit alongside the best output of 'White Blood Cells' or 'Elephant' and hearing that they had gone back to the hard-edged, bluesy style they excel at was pleasing.

After hearing/reading/listening to this album absolutely spellbound, I was left with tears in my eyes as the final song, "There's a bright side somewhere", was playing. The brilliant musicianship, the simplicity of the music, and the expression of hope in this whole album, touched me so deeply. And that's what I want from Ry Cooder: to hear him and enjoy the sound, but also to identify with him, and to be taken on his journey with him through each and every one of his recordings. I can always trust him to speak directly to me through his music. "My Name Is Buddy" is no exception. Thanks Ry Cooder for being true on your journey, and giving me a legacy of music that never dissappoints as long as my ears, mind and heart are open to receive.

"Naturally" by J J Cale - an album that compells you to nod your head and utter the words "Hell, yeah."

Make no mistake, this album is seriously cool - a short collection of perfectly executed tunes. The tunes bop and swagger along, underpinned by tantalising guitar licks, awesome boogie-woogie piano, cheeky drum beats and Cale's laconic vocal drawl.

"After Midnight" is a cracker - a bluesy piano riff, off-beat rhythms and a sassy vocal from Mr Cale. "Nowhere To Run" is beautiful muted funk, with choppy piano, a honeyed vocal line and a solid gold horn section. Both of these tunes are perfect examples of the laid back vibe that permeates this consistently great album.

With the very successful writing team of Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley providing the words and - most importantly - the hooks (except for "Hold Tight") the-quintet-with-the-very-long-name (nicknames actually) was really big on the mid-60's British charts. From 1965 to 1969, it was difficult to listen to British radio without hearing one of their singles.
Behind the big arrangements, the individual member's contributions were hard to assess. Therefore, the band members were a bit faceless.
However, to the public, the songs spoke for themselves and sold by the truckload. These songs have managed to stay imbedded in the minds of everybody who heard them at the time.
