The only problem with Phil Spector stuff is the production. The singers, especially Darlene Love and Ronnie Spector, are incredible. Likewise the songwriters (Greenwich-Barry, Mann-Weil etc) plus the amazing 'wrecking crew' musicians and the outlandishly obtuse arrangment thought of Jack Niztsche. Quite how someone (Spector) was able to turn the fruit of all this talent into the stewed mush presented here is one of rock 'n' roll's darkest mysteries. Actually no, how he did it was through having no concept of arranging or mixing. So much so that his inability and fear of even the idea of Stereo will become the final nail that slams the coffin door of his 'legend' firmly shut.

So often "the very best of" albums can be disappointing. That was not the case with this marvellous Satchmo compilation. I have no other albums by this marvellous man and wanted something definitive with everything I'd ever heard of by him in one place. This double CD gave me exactly what I wanted.

You only have to look at the track listings to start to smile or feel nostalgic. There are so many truely great songs; classic Satchmo tracks and less well known but equally loved tunes. There are great duets, many of which have a really fresh immediate feel with bits of conversation and banter between the artists as they sing.

Some of the recordings have the hiss and crackle of old LPs. I personally think this adds to the charm ... Read More:

Despite being practically THE most innovative band on the Manchester and post-punk scene, this debut on reflection still has many adhereants to the punk template. At the time what set them apart was the slower numbers and the inclusion of keyboards in the band. The keyboards may have lost their novelty value, but they still create an effective bleak atmosphere for such post-punk classics as "Two Steps Back" and "Frightened". MES' lyircs may be a touch generic on some numbers, with most of the songs about drugs and little to indicate his great lyrics in the future, but No Xmas for John Quays still throws up some great lines. Despite the fact 'shoegazing' was over in the media's eye with the advent of grungeTM & Nirvanamania, one of the key S/G-acts Slowdive released a classic second LP. Debut 'Just for a Day' (which is reissued alongside the second & third LPs) didn't advance much more on the early e.p.'s/singles ('Slowdive', 'Morningrise','Holding Our Breath'). Here the'Dive (as they were never known...) came into their own - delivering on the promise of their initial work which existed in a plain between AR Kane/Cocteau Twins/My Bloody Valentine & more recent acts such as Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Engineers & a truly awful Swedish band called Jenniforever (or something like that) I had the misfortune of seeing the other night! Vladimir Ashkenazy must rank as one of the greatest pianists of the modern era. His blend of flawless technique and sensitive interpretation marks him out as being uniquely placed to deliver as near to definitive performances as it is possible to get. This set of piano concerti was my introduction to his work, and I remain as impressed now as I was when I first heard them.
