Having loved Screamadelica I bought this album on CD when it was released back in 1994. After the excellence of Screamadelica I thought this would be a safe purchase based on some glowing reviews but sadly I was wrong.
The album sounds very uneven, with Stones clone tracks like Rocks and Jailbird jarring against tracks like Funky Jam, despite the presence of George Clinton on 2 tracks. A few weeks after buying this CD I remember trading it in against something else, but at the end of the day I think we can forgive them for this temporary loss of direction because by 1997 the Scream were back on form with Vanishing Point - Burning Wheel on that album is an amazing track.

It is common parlance to go along with the time-honoured myth that the greatest of all English rock composers and songsmiths emerged from the the 1960s culminating in arguably their greates works in the latter half of the decade. I am thinking of people like Ray Davies, Steve Marriot and Ronnie Lane. Whilst these songwriters and musicians have their moments of undoubted greatness, nobody can come close to the genius that is Jason Pierce.
Lazer Guided Melodies is simply one of the greatest pieces of music to have ever emerged from this country. It's genius lies in the fact that it skillfully combines free-form jazz, plaintiff melodies and songwriting craftsmanship utilizing a variety of percussion and strings. Songs flow almost seamlessly from ... Read More:

I can honestly say this was my most pleasant Manics surprise yet - (apart from seeing them live). I didn't realise they had all these hidden B-side treasures - admittedly, these were mainly from their 'glory years' early to mid 90s - b4 fame, money & er, pies, seemed to get to their heads & seriously affect their output. Back in the days of The Holy Bible & b4, as far as I can remember, no-one actually gave a toss about the Manics apart maybe the trendiest London gig-goers, so it's a nice surprise to discover all these longstanding gems like 'Donkeys', 'Sculpture of Man' & 'Comfort Comes' without having to buy old B-sides off Amazon or ebay. Admittedly, there is some crap like the last 2 tracks on CD one - and to be honest CD 2 seems pretty pointless ... Read More:

Again, as always, I owned this on tape in the '90s and binned it. Bought it the other day and it's still stunning. I was mortified when they initially fell out, but glad they patched things up, although I never did hear the follow-up record.
Make no mistake, there are a few absolutely astonishing tracks on this CD that are worth it's purchase alone; Yes, You Do, Although, etc.
It's a work of beauty and will be on my ipod and hifi for years to come. I still can't get my head around McAlmont's vocal range and Butler's playing. Plus the '60s slightly Spector-ish production. Oh it's a dream.

one of the most listenable and emotive albums i've heard in a long while discovered this very late but glad i found it . the opener Paris Train is an incredible swirling cascading sound with beths kinda just woken up vocals make it ever more sexy to listen to . with guests Emmylou Harris and Ryan Adams adding the tinge of country / americana on songs like God song . Mount Washington simply rolls over you like a wave . the ska like Anywhere breaks up the sound into an uptempo vibe . Ted's Waltz is simply an amazing song so deep like the ocean ..way to go!
so where is ms Orton now... anyone know ?

This is one of my favorite albums of all times and I'm looking forward to getting the remastered disc. But can anyone tell me if this 2006 version is the same as the 2001 version (e.g. does it have the extra tracks, Howard Hughes, Grasshopper, etc.)? The extras aren't given in the track listing on this page.

If Ok Computer didn't exist, this would be my favourite album. However, if one is of the opinion that Ok Computer is more than a mere album....then I guess this could be classed as my favourite.
It's one for thos outrageously late nights. Even when played at a very low volume it sounds amazing (how many albums can you say that about?) Essentially it's a collection of blissed out minimal electro. I wouldn't call it chill out, for at extreme volumes tracks like "Human Being" rock, and as anyone who's seen them live will testify, "Broke" has the ability to batter all opposition into the ground. However, this album is best listened to when chilling out....it's just so laid back.
The hilights are plentiful, there's ten of them. However, extra special mention must be made ... Read More:

I have never said this about an album before, but it is sheer perfection. Every Idlewild album is diferent, that's what makes them so amazing. It has been 10 years since Captain, so they, as well as their music, have grown up. They have made a brilliant album.

As a fan converted by 1985's Low-Life album I read up on the band and it was apparent they took TIME between recording. It was thus a great shock to recieve Brotherhood the very next year! I know NOW that this haste was due to Factory Records haemoraging money into The Hacienda night club but back in 1986 all I knew was there was a new album to be welcomed!
Brotherhood builds on Low-Life and adds acoustic guitar to their electronic palete to great effect. It also bosts their synth sound at it's best, the classic New Order sound never got any better than this!
Paradise is a good intro with drums ala Love Vigilantes, Weirdo swaggers along on Peter Hook's booming bass with a great solo too. As It Is When It Was is a classic, with low key acoustic guitars mingling to emotive effect with bass. ... Read More:
