Uncomfortable is probably the best word to describe this album. It's not always an easy listen, the sonics of the production tend towards the treble on a great deal of the songs and gone is the shimmering pop sheen of A Different Class (which to be honest I think was overrated, His 'n' Hers being a "purer" version of the same ideas.) It's really worth getting hold of some of the singles from around this time as the b-sides such as The Professional, Champagne Socialism and Ladies Man are better than some of the songs on here and really spell out Jarvis' dissillusion and dissenchantment with the pop world he had spent so long trying to enter. If I analyse The Darkness by their Amazon entries;
1. Although their first album is 10.98 new it is being given away (at 1p plus P&P) in the Marketplace.
2. Their second album is little better at 7.96 new or 30p plus P&P.
3. Their so-called "Platinum Collection", which is basically their 2 albums is a bargain bin 4.98.

I've listened to their 2nd album and it sounds like a cross between Queen and Status Quo, with The Chipmunks on lead vocals.

As they ride off into the sunset, like the Lone Ranger, people will say "who were these men"?

The Remote Part

Some six years on from the Remote Part, we can now reflect on how it sits in Idlewild's catalogue of work. It was a successful albums which habours some excellent singles. But as much as I'm a fan, it remains to me their most frustrating work. It has the sound of a band torn between the raucous angst and reverberation of Broken windows and the label driven desire to be a successful commercially sensible pop-rock band. It doesnt work. Whilst the title track and all the singles from it, including YHTWIYA, and American English are some of the band's finest work, a number of other songs simply don't hit the mark and there is a feeling of hapless filler on an album which is only actually 38 minutes long! I have a distant recollection that this album was a collection of tracks as chosen by the band. I don't know where I read this, but it explains the addition of a few of the tracks on this essential album. This is a chronological guide through what you could loosely call now the early years of Charlatans music, and opening tracks don't get much better than "The Only One I know", which takes you (if you are of a certain age) back into baggy trousers, floppy fringes and indie clubs in an instant. Through the less familiar tracks (to me at least), to the floor filler "Weirdo", the big tunes get bigger, and I love the inclusion of the fabulously titled "I Never Want An Easy Life If Me And He Were Ever To Get There."

Sunshine Hit Me

I can't even begin to describe how amazing this album is in words, but i'll try my best :)

The emotion and dedication put into this record is what makes it so great, the music sounds real, honest. The songwriting is top quality too, can never predict where the songs heading. Another thing I like about this album is how varied the instrumentation is; on practically every song there is organs and keys galore, filling up the sound, lovely use of percussion (cowbells, shakers, even pots and pans make an appearance). Considering this is two blokes in a shed, its an outstanding achievement.

This album was seen as a compromise when compared to the bands first two albums which were were heavier in content and lyrical damage.This album started the electronic sound like the band would master later on in their career,here they were just toying with it,while the sound is certainly accessible,there is the odd dull moment lodged in between a solid enough piece of work.
The band use more vocals than they did before and perhaps after here,and thats fine and there are contributions from the singer of super furry animals and the ex guitarist of slint to boot but with two very short tracks seeming somewhat lost in the bands version of post rock this album isnt perfect,but still enjoyable when it wants to be.
