This was back in the day when Disney were great: when the films had great stories to tell, when the characters were heroes and heriones and when the soundtracks had you singing along.
And this soundtrack really does make you sing (even if, like me, you're terrible). I mean, who in the English speaking world doesn't know at least the chorus to Colours Of The Wind?
But aside from being really catchy, Disney do what they did best and make sure that moral messages are conveyed throught he tracks too. Take Colours Of The Wind, for example. The original score for Toy Story is probably the best music Randy Newman has ever written. The Score contains dozens of original themes all of which are interesting and instantly memorable. As well as the score Newman also wrote 3 songs for the movie all of which are performed by himself and have heartfelt meaning and a certain honesty that only Newman can create. Newman joins the select group of composers who have been successful at Disney Scoring including George Bruns & The Sherman Brothers, and the legends that are Alan Menken & Howard Ashman. Newman went on to score the sequel as well as other Disney Pixar movies, although very good and worth checking out none of them match his original score for Toy Story.

For many, this is the most moving oratorio ever written - not just because its principal subject matter is so emotive, but because musically and philosophically, it is a work of immense spirituality.

Tippett wrote his own libretto. One that, with searing insight, forces us to face the 'shadow' (the dark side) of humanity and recognise the 'glory of light'.

I cannot listen to this work now without being moved to tears at least twice; every time when the incarcerated teenager screams to his desperate mother: 'I will defy the world to reach you!'.

Thought this was a lovely idea for a children's CD, with great songs (and slightly 'different' from the norm) from around the world. I was really disappointed in the never-ending introductions and unconstructive 'chatter' before every single song, though, making it completely useless as a bedtime CD or even a nice 'music' CD, since it's all turned into a kind of lesson and once listened to my kids couldn't be bothered listening to it again as it was boring second time around and rather pointless. Very disappointing as the idea was super.
