I bought this record based on the strength of the opening song, 'Oscar'. The song features some gorgeous harmonics and shuffling drums to begin with, but what makes the song is its construction. I found the gradual accumulation of Anna Clementi's sampled vocals and the shift in mood from ambience to a sensual trance excellent. At around 3.00 the song floats in the ambient key, before satisfyingly building up a head of steam again. A pretty flawless song.
However, unfortunately the rest of this album doesn't display the same kind of dexterity. For a start, nothing else reaches the same pace as the opener, although 'Gute Loune' and 'Wonderful' do well to create a summery festivity, with some good performances from Tweed and a typically ... Read More:

All the edge had been broken off the groove of Morcheeba by the time of this disappointing third album.
"Rome Wasn't Build In A Day" served as inconsequential lead single and the rest of the album is lightweight.
"World Looking In" starts promisingly by morphs into a stodgy peice of blandness.
The rest of the album is forgettable. The title track is a pale, anaemic relation to the title track of "Big Calm."
A startling underacheivement.

I appreciate there is a real tendency to have endless glowing reviews on amazon and that people rarely post negative feedback. Well, i'm afraid I am going down the glowing praise route. This album is absolutely supurb, without a doubt in the Top 5 of my entire collection and worthy of every star I have given it.
It has everything. The chilled out blissful tunes that made GA such a big hit with their first album Vertigo and the stomping floor fillers that get played out and about all the time. critics claim a good album must deliver from start to finish and take you on some sort of a journey. this album does exactly that, from the hip hop tinged Suntoucher via the upbeat Superstylin' and Fogma (which is an immensely dirty fat tune!) which both raise the pulse somewhat, ... Sorry, but I've got to stick up for this album, it's an absolutely timeless classic....
I'm frankly surprised to see words like 'nothing special' used to describe this album... It set a benchmark upon release and is a classic example of Nineties cerebral techno. There are plenty of deep rhythms and vibes to get into on this album, and it contains the organic blueprint of future FSOL releases to come...
Rather than lightweight, this album is accessible, up tempo and very listener friendly. You don't need to sit in a room and think seriously about the concepts at work to enjoy it (as with some FSOL albums). It's far more immediate than that whilst retaining a good degree of intelligence...
This record's like a favourite pair of trainers. You forgot ... Read More:

Even if you are not an Ibiza or dance music junkie you will find this of interest. I'm not, and I did. Manages to blend the contempory and eclectic with some golden oldies. Nice.

Listening to CDs 1 and 2 of this compilation is like listening to two entirely different albums. Whilst CD 2 "Dawn" is as delightful as you'd expect from the excellent "Classic Chillout" series, with its soaring strings and choral harmonies to send shivers down the spine, they have decided to fill CD1 "Dusk" will dull, minimalistic thudding trance tunes. There is the odd commercial track from the likes of Moby and Leftfield, but let's face it, what self respecting chillout fan doesn't own these tracks already? On the other hand, CD2 introduces the listener to an array of beautiful haunting melodies. The particular highlight for me is Louis Clarke's "Moonlight River in Spring", combining oriental flutes and cymbals with bubbling synthesisers. Morricone, Mancini and all the kings of cinematic chillout ... Read More:

A dark debut that is both memorable and stylish. The trip-hop feel sounds dated now but this was an accomplished debut with a rack of strong songs - "Tape Loop", "Trigger Hippie" and "Never An Easy Way" being the strongest examples.
An interesting set of sounds and musical landscape supports Skye Edwards' smooth vocals.

I alreay had a couple of CDMs and liked them, but when I heard this one I was hooked from the first bars of Jo Manji's opener. What a song, what an album! Ive now got almost all of the collections but this still shines above the rest. I think its the variety and musicianship which makes it such a tranfixing pleasure to listen to. Try it loud and on your best HiFi for maximum chill factor. I'll refund your money myself if you dont like it!
