Since this is one MOBY's first CD's, one cannot be too tough on him. However, the term ambient (penned by Brian Eno in the Seventies) used to mean multi-layered, ethereal space/mood music. Moby keeps the layers and the moods, but the constant percussion (it's good) keep it from being anything but relaxing. This represents a good foreshadowing of what moby was to produce.

It took me a long time to begin to appreciate this album. When I first heard it I was really disappointed because it is quite unlike "Lifeforms" which I love. But then one day i totally fell in love with one of the ambient tracks toward the end of the disk. gradually over the following years the other tracks followed suit. It is another album of theirs which in that unique and amazing way gets better every time you hear it. Each time I hear sounds differently than the last. Like an experiment in my own perception. I dont think the experiment will ever end.
and by the way, at the end of track 2 the child(?) whispering also quietly says "something I cant understand".

After I first listened to this CD I was about to come onto the Amazon site and completely lambast the CD for being a complete waste of money. I thought they'd just wrecked all the best GA tracks.
For the most part they seem to have switched the drum machines on and the disappeared down the pub.
Still I listened to it a few times at home and it's beginning to grow on me quite a bit, and I now enjoy having this album on in the background.
I'm not sure it'll be to every-one's taste however ...

Fila Brazillia - Another Fine Mess
If you like electronic music and are pretty open-minded then this album is for you. I would seriously rate this as one of the 2 best dance compilations I've ever heard. Later by Bent also shares the podium with Fila's AFM. It's not a beat-matched bonanza, far from it - it's a grand fade-in/fade-out selection of funky, unusual and dance-friendly tunes that together make a blisteringly listenable piece of work.
Perhaps it's the seemingly incongruous styles that are spliced together with stainless steel perfection, maybe it's FB's wealth of experience as musicians and DJs or maybe it's just that these guys have an ear for what works - but it's probably all of the above. Either way, right from ... Read More:

Seeing that this follows after the excellent Chillout Session 2, i have to say i'm not impressed with this follow up. There are way too many tunes lifted straight from the previous 2 albums, and its not like there is a lack of quality chillout music to choose from!
MoS also seem to have a knack for choosing rubbish remixes of certain songs on their compilations, such as Jakatta's American Dream (the definitive version of which appears on Chilled Out Euphoria) and Bent's Swollen. Why they decided to go with the remix they did rather than the totally brilliant (and in my opinion more chilled) Dusted remix is beyond me.
On the other hand, it's not all bad. If you don't own Chillout Session 1 or 2 from MoS buy this by all means, but ... Read More:

Sorry, but I've got to stick up for this album, it's an absolutely timeless classic....
I'm frankly surprised to see words like 'nothing special' used to describe this album... It set a benchmark upon release and is a classic example of Nineties cerebral techno. There are plenty of deep rhythms and vibes to get into on this album, and it contains the organic blueprint of future FSOL releases to come...
Rather than lightweight, this album is accessible, up tempo and very listener friendly. You don't need to sit in a room and think seriously about the concepts at work to enjoy it (as with some FSOL albums). It's far more immediate than that whilst retaining a good degree of intelligence...

This isn't consistently brilliant like Play or consistently good like 18, but it does have some simply outstanding material on it. The opening Hymm, for exapmple, and Into the Blue, God Moving Over the Face of the Waters and When it's Cold I like to Die. Those are the dreamy, whistful spacey ones. Also exceptional is Everytime You Touch Me, and I don't usually like that sort of thumping club music. It's tracks like All That I Need is to be Loved that I don't like. I find them discordant and jarring.

Sometimes bands limit their imaginations but with this single The Future Sound Of London seemed to take one quite simple idea and let it expand and grow. The result is nearly 31 minutes of seamless techno ambience and a perfect companion to the Lifeforms album.

I think everyone found the previous release, Jump Leads, a bit TOO smooth for their liking. I have to admit, I'd been snapping up all Fila releases up until that point but just wasn't feeling it.
Seems like Phoebus Brumal is the complete anti-Jump Leads. The slick smooth funk is out the window, to be replaced by some seriously perky upbeat tracks. The mood of the album is similar to the uptempo disc of Brazilification 2.
Plenty of energy and vibrancy in all of the tracks on offer, however I still don't have those special stand out moments as when I'm listening to Maim That Tune, Powerclown or Braziliafication 1, but I'm glad to see that these guys are still firing these albums out AND contantly changing and shifting their sound.

So there were many super amazing psychadelic albums first time round, in the 60's and 70's.
So, this double album wears its floyd, beatles, donovan, shankar influences on its sleeve.
So, this is as good as, if not better than many amazing albums of the 60's.
Take two visionary producers who gave us some of the most complete, best electronic releases of the 90's, who are now getting to grips with song based structure, and orchestrating real instruments with boundless passion, and staggering craft, and you'll see why.
Best described as retro - future, this album persuades one that the psychadelic spirit existed way, way before the sixties and still will for eons to come. Visually as well as Aurally evocative, this masterwork has ... Read More:
