A dark debut that is both memorable and stylish. The trip-hop feel sounds dated now but this was an accomplished debut with a rack of strong songs - "Tape Loop", "Trigger Hippie" and "Never An Easy Way" being the strongest examples.
An interesting set of sounds and musical landscape supports Skye Edwards' smooth vocals.

Moby's self-titled debut is merely just a collection of tracks and singles released under the Instinct label during the late 80s and early 90s, and whilst such collections seem uneven and sparse, this album, with its relentless energy of early 90s house and techno anthems seems to have manageable cohesion and consistency.

Beginning with the hard-edged raving 'Drop A Beat', this track sets the tone and epitomises most of the hard-edged techno that is vastly featured amongst the album's twelve tracks, such as the chaotic 'Next Is The E', the darkly sounding 'Have You Seen My Baby' and the catchy 'Ah-Ah'.

I persisted with this album, but I just can't get into it. Being a fan of the whole ambient/electronica/trance scene I had high hopes for FSOL, but these just weren't realised.

Imagine a banquet where the most delicious and exotic foods and wines are served up. Just as you start to enjoy each course, you find your meal suddenly replaced by the most bland and sometimes bizarre choices. This is how I'd sum up this album, there are some tasty morsels, but it just doesn't add up to a satisfying meal.

Goldfrapp are of the same creed as groups such as Lemon Jelly, Zero 7 and Portishead, offering up what is the arguably more intelligent side to modern dance music. New single 'Train' sees movement away from their earlier slightly more chilled-out, experimental works, while still remaining impressively innovative - dirty electronic bass lines drive the song forward while the relatively mellow, sensual vocals provide a good contrast. Very glam, very sexy, defiantly not your ordinary type of dance music, but defiantly the type that makes you want to move.
