Unlike the slightly inferior version of the album currently available in America, this UK release is a straight re-issue of the original album, with six duets and four solo tracks - two each by Kenny (Silent night and The Christmas song) and Dolly (White Christmas and a medley of Winter wonderland and Sleigh ride).

The solo tracks are excellent but it is the six duets that make this album stand out among my many wonderful Christmas albums. Dolly wrote five of the songs especially for the album and the other is also an original song. I believe in Santa Claus and With bells on are rollicking, up-tempo songs. Celtic Christmas

A little gem of a cd; there are quite a few songs that I had never heard before which makes it a change from the normal Christmas carol compilations - though for all I know they may be Celtic (or Irish) standards.
The instrumentation, as one might expect from the title, includes harps, pipes whistles and guitars as well as strings and is very nicely done; as someone else has remarked the effect is otherworldly in parts, and in others I find it attractively 'ancient'.
I would thoroughly recommend this cd as something to listen to in it's own right or as background music whilst putting the tree up, which I suspect is what most people would want it for.
An absolute snip at the price too !!

The problem is that role goes to Fred's head in the worst way possible, which means Scrooge at the start and not at the end. Bought this disc on the back of a rave review from one of the Sunday papers (Times, I think) but have been rather disappointed. the soloists are fine but the choral and orchestral parts sound thin and anaemic to me. I'm going to look for a more 'traditional' version like the Colin Davis perhaps. I'm untutored in music but this version seems to lack conviction, which is what I think Messiah needs. Maybe a more knowledgeable person would like this but it doesn't stir me (or it appears, the performers)the way I think The Messiah should.
