This is a truly wonderful recording of the Christmas music of one of the greatest British classical composers of all time Ralph Vaughn Williams performed beautifully by The City Of London Sinfonia under the direction of one of my favourite conductors,Richard Hickox.
The soloists and the choir of The Joyful Company of Singers are magnificent. Sarah Fox (soprano) and Roderick Williams (baritone) sing their parts with great expression and feeling for the music. The clarity of this recording is outstanding - one can hear every word that is sung and every sensitive note that is played due to the marvellous balance of this recording.
I have heard these works performed many times but this is by far the best recording I have heard. ... Read More:

This disc can be recommended enthusiastically to all admirers of Britten's work and also to newcomers. His genius and originality often show up most clearly when he writes for small forces. There are 33 items in total here, twelve in the Ceremony of Carols itself and twelve more songs in the collection entitled 'Friday afternoons' because that was when they were first rehearsed by his brother's pupils. Three others form a single group of settings of the highly individual and atmospheric Walter de la Mare, and the remaining six are isolated compositions from various stages of Britten's life, the Shakespeare number being accurately 'Fancie' and not 'Francie'. The Ceremony itself is set for trebles with a virtuosic harp accompaniment despatched with ... Read More:

This CD is absolutely brilliant. I originally bought it because I heard the track 'Home Away From Home' on Classic FM and wanted to come down the aisle to it, but I quickly fell in love with the whole CD, and so did my fiance. The last four tracks are my favourites but as the tracks tell their tale, they are alternately sad, thoughtful, lively and uplifting. It has some fantastic music on it - if you love Irish music and particularly the flute, viola and piano, this is the CD for you. I have since bought this CD for my mum, who also loves it, and have bought the sheet music so some friends can play it in piano and flute duet at our wedding.

I borrowed this CD on a whim recently, and have discovered just how much fun most of it is. But let me warn you, this is like nothing else you've ever heard before.
This is a rock and roll orchestra Christmas CD. Don't know what I mean? Well, many of these tracks feature an orchestra backing up electric guitar, keyboard, and drums. And these aren't your parents' arrangements, either. The best example is "Christmas Eve/Sarjevo 12/24" which gives "Carol of the Bells" a heavy rock arrangement. And it is absolutely fun.
The disc is about half instrumental, and those are the best tracks by far. Another highlight is "A Mad Russian's Christmas" which includes themes from "The Nutcracker." But they aren't all hard rock arrangements. ... Read More:
