The singers in this recording deliver beautiful performances, both the soloists and the chorus - good phrasing, diction, and ensemble singing. However, I didn't realize before buying this CD that, as the liner notes say, "Neville Mariner's recording is based on the first London performance of 1743, and several numbers are markedly different from the more familiar later versions." Some pieces are sung by different voice parts, and others include bars of music that Handel cut or changed later. The most disappointing part for me was "But who may abide," (sung by bass instead of alto) which lacks the prestissimo "refiner's fire" section that most of us are used to (and which I really enjoy!) This would certainly ... Read More:

Toby avoided all the obvious songs for this collection of Christmas songs. Indeed, the only cover (as far as I know) is the title track, an outstanding love song which I first came across on Lee Greenwood’s 1985 album, also titled Christmas to Christmas, and which has also been recorded by Tanya Tucker among others.
The songs here include all aspects of the festive season and cover all moods, mixing sad songs with happy songs. Christmas rock is a great rocking song. Blame it on the mistletoe is a reflective love song. Hot rod sleigh is an amusing song that will appeal to children of all ages. In another amusing song, Toby has problems with his woman and warns her that Santa's gonna take it all back. Santa I'm right here is a sad ... Read More:

This is Irish/Folk music, played by Irish artists, with a delightful Iris love of music feel to it. I have just bought this as a CD having worn out the LP (and I am Danish!)
I an not really a fan of the Cheiftans, but Galway and the Chieftans made this album a real cracker. There is a fair amount of orchestration, with just the right blend of quiet and loud, slow and fast peices for it to be stimulating.
Other Cheiftan albums have been an aquired taste. Galway, though talented, can get OTT if you have a whole album of him. The delightful blend of flute and more traditional instuments makes this a soft, easy to listen to album. The gentle parts are play really sensitively, but the jigs are played with gusto.
