Rutter's Requiem was written in 1985. In Catholic liturgy, a requiem is a Mass for the Dead, and as such involves strong tones both of mourning and loss as well as elements of hope and eternal life as reflected in Christian belief. Rutter states that, like Brahms and Faure, there are elements that depart from the traditional lines of a Catholic requiem. Rutter takes some of the texts from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Both the first and second movements, Requiem aeternam and 'Out of the Deep', set very dark, low, sombre tones. A Very Special Christmas

I bought this cd when it first came out (15+ years ago????). I play it gleefully EVERY year without fail. I now have all of the Very Special Xmas series, but this first one is by far the very best one. Every track is perfect. I cannot recommend this collection highly enough. Beats all other Christmas compilations with ease. I NEVER tire of it - brilliant stuff!

I had not heard any music by this group prior to borrowing a copy of this album - however, this is an excellent Christmas album. As you would expect from a gospel group, they focus almost exclusively on the religious aspect of the festival, the sole exception being White Christmas. There is a different guest singer on each track except the opening and closing tracks, which are without guests.

With any album featuring a variety of guests, one's favorites depend to some extent on one's opion of the various guests. For example, my favorite guest is Shelby Lynne, who does a fine duet of The Christmas song - however, it's not quite my absolute favorite track. Chipmunks Roasting on an Open Fire

Brilliant concept-take well known Christmas songs and add amusing lyrics. I mean really amusing, not like so many so-called comedy Christmas records. Not only are these versions funny, but they have copied the style of the originals almost exactly. On "Flu Ride", for example, one would almost think it WAS Karen Carpenter and on the title track they get as close to Nat King Cole's version as is possible. I particularly liked "Carol of the Bartenders", set to the tune of "Carol of the Bells", which is not only funny, but also has a serious underlying message about drinking and driving. The Government should think about adopting it for the annual drink-drive campaign.
