by: George Lewis and Barry Martyn Band

Release Date September 16, 2004
George Lewis was one of the early New Orleans jazzmen who stayed there when others moved to Chicago, New York etc. in the 1920s. He was a great clarinettist but only came to prominence with the revivalist movement and the return of Bunk Johnson in the 1940s. He then entered a period of touring with his own groups and guest-playing with various bands when numeruos recordings were made. The 18 tracks of this CD were recorded in 1965 (3 years before the death of George Lewis) on a European tour when he was accompanied in England by the Kid Martyn Ragtime Band. George Lewis may have been past his best technical playing days but he had lost none of his soul and he performed with inspired conviction.

by: George Lewis

Release Date July 01, 1991
George Lewis was a gifted and forceful clarinetist in the Johnny Dodds style. He stayed on in New Orleans after the closing of Storyville and the move of jazz to Chicago and beyond, and he was largely unknown until he played with Bunk Johnson as part of the revivalist movement in the early 1940s. The tracks for this superb CD were recorded in New Orleans in 1951 and 1953. The CD is in two halves having 6 tracks by a quartet with support for George Lewis's clarinet from piano, banjo and bass; and 6 tracks by a traditional band with trumpet and trombone joining George Lewis in the front line, and support from piano, banjo, bass and drums.
