I would reccomend this CD to anybody who hasnt heard janis joplin before or is just starting to get into her music. It has plenty of great songs on it like the spine shuddering Down on me (my favourite track), Summertime, Ball and Chain, Kozmic blues, Bye Bye baby, it also has an unreleased acoustic version of Me and Bobby Mcgee.

Featuring in the history of North American music, and flourishing between the two world wars was the Negroid song known as the "blues". Its origin is usually attributed to W C Handy. A "blues" song has its own tonality, harmony, duple time and other requisite features, and its singer usually laments, with little restriction on bawdy detail, the absence or loss of a lover. Ma Rainey was an early and influential exponent, and also a friend and teacher of Bessie Smith (1895-1937). We, in our turn, may lament the fact that Bessie Smith's life was short, tempestuous and tragic, but we can be grateful for at least two things. Firstly, she received the advantage of superb technical quality recording during the years 1925 to 1933. ... Read More:

Being a big Billie Holiday fan, I admit to listening to this CD with some skepticism. There have been many Billie tribute CD's over the years, few ever equalling her soulfulness and artistry, but after listening to this CD, Etta really opens my eyes and ears. I wouldn't expect someone primarily known as a soul-R&B singer to nail down these songs in an entirely new blues-soul context yet retaining its jazz structure. She doesn't really have Billie's fragility of phrasing, but shows the same X factor of emotional and gut-wrenching elements in her interpretations, though on a grander scale. She adds some of her ever-present feistiness as well, which of course Billie never had, but it never detracts from the jazz feel of this CD. Feistiness ... Read More:
