This is a great genuinely live album in a way that Cheap Thrills isn't. I love Thrills but its studio augmented\dubbed\enhanced and misses the true buzz of a real live performance. This album buzzes. The accompanying booklet is a great potted history too - something missing from other Janis albums. There's 14 great buzzing tracks as opposed Thrills 7 (Okay - so two takes of Down on Me). It's raw, exciting, encapsulated in that moment of time and truly off the wall.
There's no delicacy here and sometimes Sam Andrew's vocal gets lost in the mix but never Janis' - hers storms out like a twister in a heatwave. Live versions of "Faster than Sound", "Flower in the Sun", "Magic of Love" & "Easy Rider". Shame there's no "Sweet Mary" ... Read More:

This album features Janis with no less than 4 bands: Full Tilt Boogie, Big Brother & The Holding Company, Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Kozmic Blues Band. It's brilliant and highly enjoyable and I don't mind if 80s studio instruments are added! My favourite tracks are the powerful Magic Of Love, the heart-rending One Night Stand, the melancholy Farewell Song, the cheeky medley of Amazing Grace/Hi Heel Sneakers and the riveting Catch Me Daddy. I have no hesitation in placing this album on a par with Pearl, Kozmic Blues or Cheap Thrills. Great songs performed with passion!

There is barely a single weak moment on Koko Taylor's 1978 LP. Sure, her remakes of "I'm A Man" (as "I'm A Woman") and "Wang Dang Doodle" are somewhat less than innovative, but just about everything else is just plain great. And Taylor is backed by an excellent little combo which includes guitarists Johnny Moore and Sammy Lawhorn, saxist Abb Locke, and the legendary Joe "Pinetop" Perkins on the piano.
Nobody can really cover Howlin' Wolf and get away with it, but Koko Taylor does as good as anybody on a really solid "Spoonful", and her swaggering renditions of Mel London's "Cut You Loose" and the saucy Irma Thomas-single "You Can Have My Husband" are just magnificent. "Let The Good Times Roll" and "Hey Bartender" still pop ... Read More:
