Jeffrey Lee Pierce's haunted vision is given full rein on this oft-underrated follow up to the better known 'fire of love'. All the psychoses of the previous record, the punked-up swamp blues, the great melodies dolorously sung and the Bo Diddley rhythms are present and correct. The sound echoes across a century of American music and is a precursor to the Detroit sound (Jack White is a fan). Numbers by the Carter Family and Crredence are given re-workings that hint at the desperation and lawlessness of their Southern setting but it is Pierce's ghostly 'Mother Of Earth'replete with keening slide guitar and the frantic 'Devil In The Woods' that typify the sound of this record. If you like the White Stripes, the Detroit Cobras, Robert ... Read More:

Beautifully packaged in Men with Bears 180 gr. vinyl, this record shows different sides of this seminal band. A pop face that is filtered by a punk structure, psichedelic influences, a true passion for songwriting. But above all, we hear from those grooves a real and complete lively performing group. This record tells us stories from another era, when recording songs was an immediate and true act. That's why I love listenning to punk records like this: sincere, hard, direct, full of ideas, very distant from today's mass pop levelled plastic productions.

Reviewing `Give `Em Enough Rope' a little while back, I began thinking about other albums which had truly storming openings. Ubu's `the Modern Dance' opens with the spectacular `Non-Alignment Pact', the Scars had the ferocious `Leave Me in the Autumn' on `Author! Author!' and even those ole jazz-funksters A Certain Ratio kicked into their crafty classic 'Sextet' with the quiet blisterer `Lucinda', but a match for all (and better than most!) is the heavenly pop-rock beginnings served up by Penetration on their superb second album; `Coming Up For Air'.
`Shout Above the Noise' and `She is the Slave' start us off and both are truly magnificent. `Shout' starts with trad r'n'b guitar before EXPLODING in a wall of solid rock noise.

Ok so the negative stuff first. This album has dated badly. Songs like the Cosh which name checks the poll tax and Beirut Moon which was an appeal for more action to help release John Mcarthy who was held hostage in Beirut now sound so out of date.
That said there are several positives from this album. The production is quite good and infact in many ways it's a better more coherant album than "Now then".
Several of the tracks are very good indeed by SLF standards. "No Surrender" (not as antagonistic as it sounds) and "It's a long way to paradise" still pack a punch.
This album saw the debut of Bruce Foxton in the group and there are plenty of signs of his bass work on many of the songs.

This album goes down as one of my all time greats and I am amazed at how little attention it gets. It's packed full of awsome tracks like "Dope for Guns" and "Somethin' that I said" and of course Babylon's burning. Full of raw punk energy with a good layer of reggae inspired rhythm. It captures the ambience of the times with songs like SUS and Jah Wars.
I was lucky enough to be in the crowd at the Marquee when the last tracks were recorded. What a night and what a band. They would wipe the floor with most of todays offerings.

2,000,000 voices, the 3 rd album to come from the amazing geordie punk band. 3 albums on and they still are as angry and politically chrged as they were at the start. They raise alot of issues for the working class in Britain such as Unemployment, War, people taking advantage of authority. This album shows the upstarts moving from their raw punk roots and entering a more varied music style. With the accoustic England, the reggae I Understand, the very soft classic style I Wish, the country style Mensi's Marauders, the vocal Heaths Lament. The others are all punk, they havn't gone too far. My persnoal favourates on this album are Youre Knicked, a song about police abusing thier authority, Last Night Another Soldier, We're Gonna Take The World, Kids On The Street ... Read More:

CRASS were the only genuine ANARHO-PUNKS who actually lived the 'punk' ideal, operating completely independently from their EPPING FOREST safe-house.
'CHRIST-the ALBUM' was released in late '82, and following their previous low-priced vinyl releases, this album [on initial release] was a radical departure, a '2-record set', lavish in presentation, housed in a fetching stark black box, costing a relatvely-high cost 5 pounds [expensive by CRASS standards].
the SOUTHERN STUDIOS sessions here yielded glossy, impeccably-produced production values, but still remained very much at heart an anarchic aural document, which I regard as among CRASS' finest works.
Opening with the screeching guitarwork of 'HAVE A NICE DAY', [a typically venimous ... Read More:

In many ways, Mission of Burma have spent the last 20-odd years as the ultimate band for the obscure music fan: one full LP release, which nobody bought, then total silence and a supposed vicarious influence over almost all alternative American music since. Now they return with a new album and, it would seem a completely unmanageable reputation...
I think the best comment to make on OnOffOn is that if this was the debut record of some brand new group, I'd be incredibly excited. I'd think it had great imagination, originality, confidence and was a fascinating new voice on the rock landscape. Terrific musicmanship, a great blend of three voices, wry commentry on modern life, self-deprecating self awareness and they really play it like they mean it. In some ways, ... Read More:
