This is another matter. Of course the first three albums come first--but then, especially if their 80s bump-and-grind never appealed to you, you really must get this set and settle in with it. It is a kind of endpoint for punk's relationship with its audience--not just the pose of hostility followed by loud/fast pure entertainment, this is a record where the hostility is real, on both sides. It's more like Iggy's "Metallic KO" or Dylan's "Live 1966" electric set--it is the MUSIC that is too much for this audience, and the band just shoves its loopy, difficult dadaist music back down the throats of these would-be pogo-ers. Pink Flag

Disappointed by the Ramones albums? This album packs more songs in to less time, with genuinely witty and intelligent lyrics and inventive music. Pre-empting the post punk movement, Wire moved on from the tired nihilism and cliches of punk. Pink Flag is filled with plays on the song structure. 106 Beats That was originally intended to be a song of exactly 100 syllables, and the title track was supposed to be "Johnny B. Goode" written with one chord. Whilst the Sex Pistol's debut was carefully crafted in the studio, Pink Flag's clean production ensures that instruments carve out clean shapes through the mix. For Wire, there was to be no cashing in, as they moved on and continued to innovate over their next albums.

there I have said it, this song rests easy with these greats.
If the Stranglers have now found the formula again after the under acheving Roberts years then they have given every man and woman in black what we have yearned for over the past 16 years we knew you had it in you still it just took the finding of the right man in Baz, its a pity Norfolk Coast was not minus Roberts here's to the next 16 years and I am serious what would we do without the Stranglers

The prostitution of the Stranglers back-catalogue has been going on for almost a decade and a half now - there now have to be more pointless compilations and dubious quasi-bootleg live albums released now than there are original studio albums! (It's almost getting as bad as Hawkwind!)

Like many new-wave era bands, back in their day, they released not only over 10 studio albums, but spawned a plethora of non-album B-sides, free flexi discs and the like. This box set contains the band's complete studio output during the classic UA years, for many the golden years of The Stranglers. The set is crammed onto four CDs. All six albums are here, along with the one off singles and the b sides. It is good to have them all in one place.

The first two albums cover much the same ground with melodic pub rock to the fore. They include gems such as Grip, No More Heroes, Peaches and Rok it to the Moon. The use of keyboards separates them from most of the pub bands of the time. Recorded fast, they did well at catching the feel of the band's early live sets.

I'm giving this album 5 stars.The wit and humor of the band's seminal work is mostly missing but the focus remains tight.

Musically, it is very reminiscent of Poly's severely under-appreciated solo work in the 80s.

I knew Poly, or Maharani as she is known, from my days as a Hare Krshna devotee and she is a sweet and complex personality which I feel this album reflects.

It's not just punk rock guitar slashing and it does a very good job of servicing her vocals.

I sense most will find this to be an interesting and honest work.
