This, quite simply, is a classic.
This album changed my life. 18 years old, bored with prog rock, this was like a million volts shock to my nervous system.
It still sounds brilliant, vital and relevant.
If there's a better guitar solo than "Story of Love", I don't know it, If there's anything more exciting than the point halfway through "Nights in Venice" when the song dissolves into white noise only for the rampaging drums to bring it back from the precipice, you're deluded.

The prostitution of the Stranglers back-catalogue has been going on for almost a decade and a half now - there now have to be more pointless compilations and dubious quasi-bootleg live albums released now than there are original studio albums! (It's almost getting as bad as Hawkwind!)
Like many new-wave era bands, back in their day, they released not only over 10 studio albums, but spawned a plethora of non-album B-sides, free flexi discs and the like. Often, in retrospect, these sorts of tracks would emerge as some of the most interesting and experimental of a band's output... however this isn't so true in the Stranglers' case, as their albums and A-sides often contained tracks as bizarre as anything else (Gospel According To The MenInBlack, ... It may be a little bit of a liberty to describe this band as the best-ever but that's not to say that this CD is complete studio works of a truly great band. The CD starts with the ultimate lo-fi debut single "Forming", a great song despite (or perhaps because of) the very basic recording quality. It sets the scene for this incredible collection and the amount of times it's been covered or ripped off is a testament to its quality. The b-side "Sex Boy" is a very interesting song but this time the recording quality is a HUGE let down. The next three tracks (the Lexicon Devil ep) are amongst the best matching great songwriting, fantastic performances and great recording quality. The GI lp is up next and almost as good, it's standout tracks being "What We Do ... Read More:

i bought this album yesterday for £1 which was good because even if i never listen to it, its a quid, who cares. i just read the review saying it is good sound quality, well it is remastered so quality is better but not great as it is live. features good tracks and shows younger listeners the type of stuff that went on in the 70s and how raw punk was back in the day unlike the modern stuff now. im only 16 so i am a young listener but i love all the raw gritty punk sound that was around in 70s and early 80s, i prefer the pistols, clash, stiff little fingers over greenday and blink 182. 70s punk wasnt manufactured like stuff nowadays which is why id say this album is good but not the greatest. i wouldnt pay £15 for it but for £5 or less, yes buy this album. hope this ...
