This is a collection of ten songs from Siouxise And The Banshees. Who's career was with the rest of the punk bands, and were one of the last be signed with them movement. They fit the time perfectly, and are a great act. Songs like 'Hong Kong Garden' 'Playground Twist' and my personal favorite 'Israel'. If you have never heard any of there material i think there worth checking out. There quite the different act, i believe. And if you like the 80's gothic sound of Joy Division, Sisters Of Mercy, Bauhaus i think these are worth checking out. Also to fans of any music. I know i mentioned Punk and Gothic sound which might sound bizarre but it actually is true i think.

How to write and record an album in less than 24 hours. You don't get albums like that anymore. You certainly don't get a band covered with pimples in a studio with a producer in the calibre of John Cale.
Even more so when the songs are only half baked ideas. Back then, however, it was revolutionary. Nowdays, even with tons of pimples on your face, you're still expected to sound polished to death, and worse, with no pimples at all.
The great thing in writing and recording within 24 hours - like this one was - is that you can capture a very specific mood and sound. The benefits: it makes the album homogenous, and the improvisations help in making the result intersting even after 20 listens.

this is where it all started trace any modern day punk bands origins and they all begin with iggy pop. a true master, without ever needing to take himself too seriously

This compilation basically showcases SLF singles, although be warned the B sides really are not up to much. Moreover, the production on a lot of the songs on this really sounds dated and some of it is hard to listen to. It must be said that Jake Burns is NOW a great singer but his vocals on SLF's early stuff really aren't up to much, it's just a gravelly shout. Nonetheless, towards the latter stages of this compilation (for example, on tracks such as "listen" or "Bits of Kids") his vocal delivery really picks up, although I would say their live cds are a far better bet to catch the quintessential SLF experience. Alternatively, buy "Get a Life", "Tinderbox", or the best of cd selected by Jake called "song by song" which I personally think is a better compilation ... Read More:

I was reading a book by the jouranlist/broadcaster Paul Morley and he was speaking about the Strokes and how they have celverly created a new trend within the 'retro' field. Throughout the 90's we have seen bands take influence from styles and music of previous years, be it acid rock, garage, rock, 60's british invasion etc...
What the Strokes did which is very interesting is, to rather than directly associating themsleves directly to a band - (easiest example - oasis - beatles) they look like they harked back to some punk/rock band from the seventies - people think of the strokes and say "oh yes they are some retro punk, garage band - influenced by the seventies) - but when you actually look at it - they didnt actually look like any band from the ... First note: if you're very picky about vocals you might not like Tom Verlaine's voice. He sounds like a yodeller who's been punched in the throat. I actually think it has character, but a lot of my friends detest Television because of how the vocalist sings. If you like weird vocalists, though, you might like him.
But where Television really come to the front is their guitar work. Make no mistake, these aren't Eric Clapton-type guitarists. Although they have the big solos they're not blues based: using more jazzy scales (which is very odd for a band considered at the forefront of punk), Television craft 8 unique, very powerful songs that redefine how the guitar can be used. When I first bought this album I just found it very pleasurable to listen to: the ... Read More:

If you like Bikini Kill, Be Your Own Pet, yeah yeah yeahs, well, they wouldn't exist without this album. Much as the other reviewer don't like Polly Styrene's vocals, they've sure been influential, becoming the standard for girl punk yelping. The difference with the Spex is that they always let you know they were having fun, more than they were raging. See old clips of them, they're smiling, not spitting. The lyrics are funny, the kind of pop culture trash that the B-52s and early Blondie were also into. The difference is that X Ray Spex were British, and they were self aware enough to make fun of themselves as much as anyone else. forget clash, sex pistols, no one wants to sound like them today, the really influential punk groups were this lot, Ramones, Buzzcocks, Undertones and TV personalities ...
