Most of the Tracks are cut from the Roundhouse with a few from Battersea Park, its in your face and all solid Stranglers, misses the heartbeat of the Hope and Anchor and does not carry the feel of being at the Roundhouse seeing then doing it but a great slice of Punk not to be missed.
Dagenham Dave at the Roundhouse on 4th Nov 2007 would be just great.

The Collection 1977-1982

The Stranglers were never easily categorised. Punk? New Wave? Goth? Christ knows, even 26 years after the latest track on this compo!

The best thing about this compo is that it didn't answer those questions on its' release in 1982 & doesn't know. The Stranglers weren't mavericks, they were just a flipping towering talent that never fitted neatly into anybody's pigeon-holes.

And after a quarter of a century, this is still the only compo you really want. Some of their Epic stuff was good(Skin Deep,European Female,Always The Sun), but it doesn't match the energy, verve or flair of every track on this little lot.

Blank Generation

A must have. Hell had already performed versions of some of the key tracks - including Love Comes in Spurts and Blank Generation - during his spells with Television and the Heartbreakers. But the versions on this legendary album finally allowed the songs to stand out as some of the great recordings of the punk period. This album for me marks a vast improvement on the previous one, "Feline". Whether this was due to Laurie Latham's production (the opening to the track "Laughing" is so reminiscent of his work for Paul Young) is a moot point: sometimes the brass and backing vocals work, sometimes they don't. What there is on this album for sure, however, is plenty of echo and depth, and plenty of polish too. (Compare the extra tracks at the end of this CD produced solely by the Stranglers.)

Of the original eleven tracks, I can take or leave the ironical "Let Me Down Easy" (all that's missing is the orchestra); the 50s rocker "Uptown"; the 60s rocker "Punch & Judy"; "Souls" (nothing special); and the quirky "Mad Hatter".

Perfect Hits 1975-1981

I have never been overly enthusiastic about Generation X compared to some of the other bands from the 70-80s era. For example no one can compare to the Sex Pistols for the 70s and in my personal opinion the Dead Kennedys were the highlight of the 80s.

However, this album is well worth getting. Billy Idol has an amazing voice and the vocals are great. Classics such as King Rocker do get stuck in your head with very good riffs and tunes.

Perfect Hits is a good album because it has all of Generation X's finest singles with a wide variety of different sounds, but all definitely catchy and listenable. Love Bites

Time for an objective view of this album, I think. I bought 'Love Bites' on its 1978 release at the same time as what would prove to be The Jam's life-saver, 'All Mod Cons'. With 'Ever Fallen In Love', the band's most famous song, riding high in the charts, I was optimistic that it would build on The Buzzcocks' classic debut album. The sleek sound of that album was replaced by an edgier, more turbulent production and the songwriting revealed a band who were trying to mature and push their ambition.
The six songs that comprise the first side of the LP suggested that they were achieving their aims. Apart from the single, the best song is probably the breathtaking 'Nostalgia', which Penetration were later to cover on their acclaimed debut album. 'Sixteen Again' would have ... Read More:

The Very Best of the Cockney Rejects

"The Very Best of Cockney Rejects" is a fine compilation of a fine band - and it's good how these tunes have stood the test of time, especially "Flares & Slippers", "I'm Not A Fool", and "The Power & The Glory".

All class stuff. But I've got two major problems with this compilation:

It sounds like it was mastered by an idiot.

The packaging is worse than those DVDs people try and sell in the pub.

The Rejects deserve better than this shoddy pish.

Sort it ahht or I'll set my dug onto ye.

The Rapture

Siouxsie and the Banshees left behind an incredibly impressive body of work which is ripe for re-discovery. Albums such as "juju" and "A Kiss In The Dreamhouse" have lush textures, sparkling pop brilliance and intense song writing, all wrapped up in a dark and mysterious mood.

However, "The Rapture", their final album, is not one of those albums. Sounding slightly tired and deflated, the Banshees ground to a halt after releasing an album that shows, in no uncertain terms, why they needed to stop. There is nothing particularly offensive about these songs, and that is the central problem with them: where the Banshees used to RAGE and HOWL and SCREAM, now the just wheeze.

As a Jam fan I purchased several of their CDs in order to replace my vinyl collection. SNAP is an excellent album it is therefore unfortunate that some of my favourite tracks are absent on the CD version. Quite why this should be the case I don't know and had it not been for this the rating would be higher.
