The Gun Club's `The Las Vegas Story' is one of my favourite albums from the 1980s- I have been gutted since my lovely tape copy (with bonus track Secret Fires) fell apart a few years ago.
The Gun Club had already been through a few incarnations, their late great leader Jeffrey Lee Pierce present and correct. Following the classic `Fire of Love', `Miami', and `Death Party' releases the band settled down with the classic union between Pierce and guitarist Kid Congo Powers. Powers had been in an earlier version of the Gun Club known as Creeping Ritual and had been taught to play by Pierce, co-writing `For the Love of Ivy' on `Fire of Love' prior to Powers joining the Cramps for the classic `Psychedelic Jungle' & `Smell ... The Dead Boys never really broke through into the public's consciousness, despite being one of the earlier punk bands. On 'YLS' though, they're focussed on their anger and buzzsaw guitars, Stiv Bators muttering and cursing between his hoarse vocals. The cover shot shows the band lurking like rats in an alley and their musical world is indeed that of a disease-infested underclass. Edgy and exciting almost throughout, they slip up occasionally: 'What Love Is,' for instance, doesn't have the intensity of most of the other songs. 'Sonic Reducer' sets the pace with an arresting intro, while 'Not Anymore' relies heavily on an impassioned delivery and the blam blam of 'Ain't Nothin' To Do' is punk at its best. The live 'Hey Little Girl' is another highlight. ... Read More:

Are Suicide in fashion again?- I forget. Here Blast First follow up the deluxe double cd issue of Suicide's debut with its follow-up.
The second bonus disc is of interest- recorded in Suicide's formative years at the Musuem for Living Artists in 1975. It's proof that bands aren't always brilliant straight away- but on these First Rehearsal Tapes are found the roots of Suicide. The opening Speedqueen relates as much to the DIY-production common to Lee'Scratch'Perry's work in the 70s (see The Upsetter's Bird in Hand to contrast the percussive sound). Suicide's themes and sound are becoming apparent- a world where Alan Vega croons Sci-Fi inflections like a 21st Century Elvis, while Martin Rev stirs up a minimal maelstrom behind him. Suicide beat The ... Read More:

Suddenly, amongst the maelstrom of punk's legion of anti-heroes emerged Ian Dury, part Fagin, part music hall master of ceremonies, part Oliver Reed at his most young and menacing. Backed by a band of peerless musicians, his tongue-in-cheek lyrics sat well against a wonderfully understated bass and drum backing, with the odd parping saxophone thrown in for good measure. The tracks follow each other thick and fast, from the humour of "Wake Up And Make Love With Me", the barnstorming rock of "Sweet Gene Vincent", the touching sentiment of "My Old Man", the vaudeville of "Billericay Dickie" and "Clevor Trever" (sic) to the quasi-punk pastiche of "Blockheads". This album is a triumph.
Also included are the marvellous (and underrrated) single "What A ... Read More:

I would seriously reccommend the 12-track highlights album as opposed to the 24-track sprawling mess. Firstly when dealing with erratic material like this, the sequencing makes or breaks the album. The highlights album begins with Malcolm McLaren's voiceover and then crashes into Rock n Roll Swindle - a good start. It includes all the best of the rock n roll songs like Something Else and Lonely Boy but none of the dross like Johnny Be Good and Road Runner where Johnny Rotten struggles to remember any of the words and consequently swears a lot! The Ten Pole Tudor songs are completely insane but seem to fit in better on the 12-track album than on the longer version.
However, the lyrics are still shocking, yet have none of the political oomph of the first ... Read More:

Jeffrey Lee Pierce's haunted vision is given full rein on this oft-underrated follow up to the better known 'fire of love'. All the psychoses of the previous record, the punked-up swamp blues, the great melodies dolorously sung and the Bo Diddley rhythms are present and correct. The sound echoes across a century of American music and is a precursor to the Detroit sound (Jack White is a fan). Numbers by the Carter Family and Crredence are given re-workings that hint at the desperation and lawlessness of their Southern setting but it is Pierce's ghostly 'Mother Of Earth'replete with keening slide guitar and the frantic 'Devil In The Woods' that typify the sound of this record. If you like the White Stripes, the Detroit Cobras, Robert Johnson, the Cramps et. al. ... Read More:

The greatest rock and roll album ever made. With the standard makeup of vocals, guitar, bass, and drums, The Gun Club stripped away the fluffy production of the 70s that had infected even LA Punk bands and reached through the fog of corn whisky to the very swamp culture of depravity that inspired rock and roll in the first place. This is the album Panther Burns and Alex Chilton hoped to record, but never approached, and only the Cramps ever become a worthy satellite of. This is the Elvis we all always knew was underneath the jumpsuit when he said his backup singers "smell like catfish." Let us hold in abeyance the current faux-worship of Jeffrey Lee Pierce that has become a pedestrian given for dead rock figures. On the internet he has been elevated to the Jim Morison Throne ...
