Gladys Knight and the Pips made some records before they signed to Motown, but those records were not successful, so these are the earliest important recordings.
I heard it through the grapevine was their first major hit, going to number two in the American pop chart (and topping the R+B chart) and also giving them a minor British hit. Gladys recorded the song at around the same time as Marvin Gaye, but Motown originally selected the version by Gladys and the Pips for single release. Marvin’s version was released as a single a year later and topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. The two versions are very different despite both being produced by Norman Whitfield. He obviously loved the song as he also produced versions ... Read More:

Planned by both Chet Atkins and Allen Toussaint who met for the first time in the 90s to cut a version of Southern Nights this is an obvious coming together of black & white artists who recorded together rather than doing covers solo.
The sort of thing which had to happen eventually seeing as so many blacks had recorded country music and so many whites had done likewise with black music.
You can trace it back right to Jimmie Rodgers in the 30s who was maybe the first to work with black musicians like Louis Armstrong.
Thus in music there is no racial prejudice
By the time of Elvis it was a case of recording songs by blacks but there was still a long way to go.Apparantly Col.Parker-who was Dutch not American-was against Elvis ... Read More:

Jimmy Ruffin’s brother David was a member of the Temptations, so talent was obviously in the blood. However, Jimmy was somewhat fortunate to hit big with What becomes of the broken hearted. Diana Ross and the Supremes had recorded it and their version was intended for release as a single. Jimmy heard their version soon after it was recorded and begged Motown to let him record it, and to hold the Supremes version until they heard his. The rest is history. The original Supremes version, which is excellent and would have been a huge hit for them, appeared on one of their albums, but Jimmy’s version, which is even better, was released as a single and became a huge hit in Britain, America and elsewhere.

Commercial jazz has had its fair share of knocks since it became fashionable to dislike the (sometimes) bland and souless playing of the likes of Kenny G et al.However, amongst the largely mindless pop music of the eighties shone this fine album.
Commercial-yes, but the playing and production are of such high quality that if you cannot recognise the splendour of these summer jazz/samba beats then you do not understand music. The soulful bonus of the fantastic Bill Withers is just about the icing on the cake.
Relax, kick back on a summer's day with a glass of cool wine and let the vibe wash over you-that's a rare kind of musical peace that you need to experience.

Yes, the other review is right inasmuch as Masterpiece has been cut to shreds whereas the completely dispensible A Song For You remains almost at full length. There was plenty of room for Motown to put both albums in their entirety on one 80-minute CD. Failing that, a double CD costing a little extra. But, the pairing of these two albums defies any logic. Far superior to A Song for You are 1990 and Wings of Love, no doubt festering away in Motown's vaults - they are sitting on gold and don't know it. Anyway, Masterpiece is one of those extraordinary albums that deserves a deluxe treatment all its own. Don't buy this travesty.

"Harlem Sessions" sounds like your favorite mix tape you made many years ago; the one that you keep playing over and over because it has all your favorite, desert-island songs. It's a groovilicious compilation of killer soul cuts from the 1970s, with blaxploitation films as the main theme. Of course, you can't realistically include EVERY great soul joint from the 1970s on two CDs, but this compilation does a great job trying. A collection of this nature has some of the usual cast of characters like Curtis Mayfield ("Superfly" and "Little Child Running Wild" from his must-have soundtrack to "Superfly") and Isaac Hayes ("Shaft"), but we also get unexpected nuggets from Cuban jazz legend Mongo Santamaria ("We Got Latin Soul"), Gil Scott-Heron's "The Bottle," Shirley ... This elegant and innovative album took the clubs and the charts by storm in 1978 at the height of the disco boom. Of course the two hit singles Le Freak and I Want Your Love are the most immediately appealing tracks, both as pop and as dance music. My other favorites include Savoir Faire with its jazzy arrangement and the soulful At Last I Am Free. C'est Chic perfectly encapsulates the mood of an era. Together with Grace Jones' Portfolio, Donna Summer's Bad Girls, Boney M's Love for Sale and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, it is one of the best disco albums of all time. The Chic movement included Norma Jean Wright and Sister Sledge, both worth your time if you like classy dance music.
