Aretha Franklin's recording career with Atlantic Records spanned from 1967 until 1979. In that time, she recorded many tracks which are now set in stone as classic soul standards such as 'Respect', 'Do Right Woman, Do Right Man', '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman', 'Chain Of Fools', 'Think', 'Angel' and 'I Say A Little Prayer'. Needless to say, all of those songs are on this collection in their original form and they are accompanied by the cream of her Atlantic days.

Merry Christmas, i have been a fan of the supremes for many years and got this as a LP when it came out, now it is on cd as well it is a good collection of songs but iam affraid i just dont like the girls doing xmas songs that much' it is still well worth having as it shows how good the girls are when it came to singing so many differant songs, so do get it and enjoy it for what it is,

You really can't fault the selection of tracks here (with the possible exception of the Ritchie Family, which made me laugh out loud on hearing it for the first time here). Classics all, and not always the obvious ones.

But as someone who loved every second of these tracks when I first bought them on 7-inch vinyl, it was incredibly frustrating to find that the tracks overlap very slightly, so you lose those ecatatic moments at the start and finish of many of them.

The cue points at the start of each track are sloppy too, so you catch the end of the previous one even if you wanted to skip it.

And in order to squeeze 44 titles on, several tracks are faded out early.

So what's this all about-Motown spending huge amounts of money then shovelling the results into the vaults where it would remain for 40 years!
How do these "experts" know what the public will buy? After all it was only through the Beatles that TM took off in the U K.
It must have made the artists wonder what they'd done wrong!
Especially Gladys Knight who was already seeing all her Fury and Vee Jay things reissued on LP.Then TM issue her cover of The Nitty Gritty-hardly essential really as Shirley Ellis had cornered the market with this one.
Interesting though the way T M covered their own songs with their own artists but through the years the CD Age has seen a mass amount of the music using any excuse to reissue it and then repeating the same ... Read More:

By the time Aretha released "Young Gifted and Black" in 1972, she had proved that she could bounce back from something of a commercial slump, with her triumphant live concerts in San Francisco (Feb 1971), which resulted in a hugely succesful live album. Some of the songs here had been recorded well before those live dates, with Aretha going back into the studio shortly afterwards to complete the album. Looking back over her career, this period can be seen as possibly Aretha's most creative - she is clearly at her peak, both interpreting other's material and writing her own songs.

I bought this album not really expecting to much from it,alright, there was the chart material that most people know and enjoy,but I was pleasently surprised to discover that this compilation is of a very high standard and consistently so.Luther genuinely had a fantastic voice,with a superb soulful delivery to equal the best in this genre.Some very catchy numbers with fantastic eighties sounds.If you like eighties R'n'b pop,this album or an album by this artist is an absolute must.I feel songs such as 'Never to much' deserve to be recognised as genuine classics in the pop genre.A very enjoyable album.

Give Me the Reason

On this album Luther was on top form. Vocally its a strong performance with his voice as smooth as silk. Yet for me what stands out most is his excellent production skills. He really makes the songs jump out of the stereo. The songs are mainly up-tempo and have rich bass lines that will really get you tapping your feet. This album boosts some of Luther's greatest songs, such as the title track and "See Me". In fact its a bit of a mini greatest hits collection with 7 out of the 9 tracks being released as singles (5 hit the top 40). Overall well worth a look whether your new to Luther or looking to build up your collection.
