Possibly THE soul album of the 80's. Serious songs dealing with insecurity, heartbreak and at times the more sensual side of relationships this was Vandross' creative peak before his A+R dept. couldn't decide how to market him and his voice became frequently wasted on poorer, less adult music. Although often written off as some sickly 'lurvve' man this album highlighted the insecurity and doubt which is the core to many of the man's best songs. The string arrangements on numerous songs, particularly 'Other Side of the World' are innovative and highlight how musically redundant most of the current 'bump and grind' music is. This is a colllection of all Boyz II mens greatest hits and every track is an absolute classic.For years I listened to rock music and used to laugh at this type of pop,but Boyz II men have shown me how great pop music is when done the right way.
Stand out tracks include everyones favourites 'End of the road','I'll make love to you','On bended knee' and my personal favourite 'water runs dry'.Having said this there is not a bad song on the album.Tracks like 'in the still of the night'show Boyz II men at their most harmonic,while 'motownphilly'adds edge to an already superlative album.
They are the undoubted kings of ballads,and perhaps criminally now ignored by the British public.This being a shame because I genuinely believe B2M are the greatest ... Read More:

I would strongly recommend anybody to buy instead "The Definitive Ray Charles" as it is not only more complete (including '60 music recorded with another label) but because there are some fantastic tracks of the '50s missing here.
"Mess Around", "Leave my woman alone" "Don't let the sun catch you crying" are some of these, and (worse of all) a collection of Ray Charles cannot be called essential when "What'd I say" is present in its EDITED form (part 1)!
Moreover the sound quality of this CD "Atlantic Years" is nothing special, being a remaster of over 10 years ago. Again "The Definitive" is a much better compilation for quality and track selection.

This product is listed as coming with two CDs. It has only has one. If you click and enlarge the back cover there are only fourteen songs listed, and the product details states one disc. However, much more space is given to a listing of twenty-plus songs across two discs -why? I give the music three stars (solid if unremarkable synth funk) but one star for the false listing of a phantom second disc.

How do you separate Aretha's Atlantic albums from the late 60's to the mid 70's? Each has it's own classic tracks, each it's hidden gems and always that superb voice, soaring from a whisper to a scream with no apparent effort.

Aretha was the acknowledged Queen of Soul, and built on her reputation with this combination of original tracks and interpretations of familiar material. The latter is well represented by "Natural Woman" (Carole King), "Money Won't Change You", here merely uptempo, rather than JBs frenetic original, and a sublime "People Get Ready", which I am sure Curtis would have appreciated.
