im a big fan of early 70's funk. james brown, however, even though he may be one of the originators, if not THE originator, of the genre, never really connected that much that me. ive always found his vocal delivery a bit grating and the majority of his lyrics are not very inspired. i know that saying this is tantamount to treason but ive gotta tell it like it is

the majority of this album just sounds like funk-by-numbers to me. none of the numbers seem to really go anywhere. on the funk radar i put james well below people like curtis mayfield and roy ayers. its all bluster and not much substance. if youre curious about this type of music and wondering where to start i would avoid mr brown alltogether and seek out instead the aforementioned ... They began their career as The Primes, singing on street corners in the ghetto areas for blacks in Detroit with Diana Ross And The Supremes (then known as their sister group, The Primettes). I agree with what reviewers have said so far. This is not as good as Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingness or Songs In The Key. It is quite a good introduction to the classic Stevie sound though and the listener can see how Stevie developed that trademark sound over the next 4 or 5 albums. I would say it is better than Where I'm Coming From and the 60s Motown period is nicely summerised on several compilations albums, so this is the first truly great Stevie solo album. My faves are 'Superwoman', 'Happier Than The Morning Sun', 'Keep On Running' and even 'Evil', though it is very cheesy, I like a bit of that sometimes!. The only negative point about some Stevie albums is the tendency to make a 3:30 pop single into an 8 minute jam which sometimes works and sometimes does not. ... Read More:

A couple of decades before the 'Now' series started, even years before all those 'K-Tel' and 'Ronco' albums, Tamla Motown in Britain were trotting out their finest on compilations.

This one released in autumn 1967, catalogues the patchy but growing popularity of the Motown sound in Britain in 1966/7. It may have seemed folly to put so many hits on one album, but they were looking to raise their profile and to consolidate on their recent successes.

Let me take it back a little further. Tamla Motown's first album in Britain, released in spring 1965 was '16 Big Hits'. That series continued for the rest of the 60s, reaching Volume 8. Hotter than July, is never really acknowledged, in despite of the achievements that Wonder managed to do with it. The album was the best selling of his career to that point and Dr Martin Luther King Jr was granted a national holiday on 26th January 1986 after his plea in the song "Happy Birthday"

Wonder promotes diversity, peace (Master Jammin'-a tribute to Bob Marley's reggae style); anger ("I ain't gonna stand for it"); politics ("Cash in your hand"), love ("All i do" and "Rocket Love") and influence ("Happy Birthday"- the song now even appears in real birthday cards, despite being written as a tribute to the civic rights work by Dr Martin Luther King Jr.)

There were several phases to the careers of the Drifters, but this compilation focuses on their seventies music. In Britain, they were much more successful in the singles charts than they had been in the sixties, when many of their best songs were hits via British cover versions. Their only major sixties hit in Britain was Save the last dance for me, here represented via a re-recording. A re-issue of At the club / Saturday night at the movie made the UK top three in 1972 and was followed into the top ten by a re-issue of Come on over to my place, though none of those songs is reprised here. In America, it was altogether different - they had plenty of major hits there up to 1965, after which they disappeared almost totally from the singles charts.
