Theme Time Radio Hour is one of the most original and enlightening music programmes on the air. It's brilliantly presented by Bob Dylan who plays an eclectic mix of often obscure records all linked by a theme. Dylan's knowledge of American popular music is immense and each programme is peppered with his unique combination of wit and wisdom. So, Chrome Dreams are to be congratulated for issuing this double album containing 52 wonderful tracks of the kind of music to be heard on TTRH. The only thing missing is the man himself but that shouldn't deter anyone from acquiring this marvellous and wide-ranging compilation of great music.

Originally released in late 1967 as a 6 song double E.P. and subsequently expanded to an 11 song album Magical Mystery Tour is the soundtrack to a one hour television film made by the Beatles( It was Paul McCartney,s idea to have a film based around magical adventures) shown twice over the Christmas period in 1967. The film is a bit of a mess, a charming mess , but a mess none the less. The album is actually much better and features many of my favourite Beatles songs.
Magical Mystery Tour was the first project for the band after the death of their manager and mentor Brian Epstein in August 1967 and many blamed the films sloppy production on the fact is lacked his mature judgement . The music though was far more favourably received than the ... Read More:

Platinum Collection

This collection is well put together and well packaged and it does all the right things. The only thing it does wrong is try to please all the people all the time.
Let's face it Genesis have been at least three different bands. It argueable that there have been more incarnations but let's agree on three for the sake of simplicity. The early work with Gabriel and Hackett that is an was of its time Trespass, Foxtrot et al up to Lamb Lies down. The early Collins singing days of Rutherford and Banks 'Then there were three' Wind & Wuthering when I think they did some excellent work. And then the Pop Band.
Perhaps I am simplyfying too much. The odd gem appears out of context of course, 'Duke' or parts of same I can cite as an obvious example. ... Read More:

Blood on the Tracks

One of my best friends played this to me when it came out. I was a "prog rock" fan at the time, and considered his obsession with Dylan as rather quaint & vaguely hippy. At first I couldn't get my head around it - and Idiot Wind both intrigued & irritated.

A couple of years later I went to Blackbush to see the old boy perform in a field - and the stand outs all came from this album. So I revisited it - and found out that I'd grown up!

Over 30 years later I never get tired of it. The first side (of the old LP) is unsurpassed, the second side is pretty nearly as good - my favourites change all of the time. This is my No 1 album of all.

Very Best Of

Having bought this CD (full-price, ouch!), I was rather disappointed.
Yes, I like Joe Brown's songs, but even though a few of the tracks had been re-recorded (and it said so on the cover), it sounded as though a couple of the "original" tracks were perhaps not the versions heard on those old 45s!

For those not used to the "proper" originals, this CD would seem a good buy on the face of it....but I felt a bit cheated!

So....I purchased the double CD "Piccadilly/Pye Anthology" at a cheaper price...that's more like it, much more satisfying!

Modern Guilt

One thing is for sure that when you buy a Beck album, you never really know what to expect, such is the multi-faceted nature of the artist, and you definitely have to approach most of his albums with an open mind. If 'Modern Guilt' could be compared with any of his previous albums, then many of the songs are closest to the melodic melancholy of 'Sea Change', but with added beats, giving this release a fresh, original sound but with all the characteristics of what makes Beck's music so aurally appealing. Danger Mouse's production matches musical influences often steeped in the late 60's and early 70's with up-front, contemporary percussion, giving much of the album a split-personality sense of laid-back, detached urgency - and it is certainly an interesting combination. ... Swinging the Blues Dancing the Ska

After the trilogy of Friends albums Jools returned with an album where the style and tone of the music was more suited to the big band sound of his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. I was hoping he reverted to being the main singer but he shares the vocal duties with his regular female vocalists Sam Brown and Ruby Turner with a star turn by Beverly Turner and two with Solomon Burke including his greatest creation `Everybody Needs Somebody to Love'.

I think the album works best with the arrangement of the instrumental numbers and the songs which Jools sings but some of the guest vocalists are given sympathetic arrangements particularly Ruby Turners ambitious take on Dylan's `Blowin' in the Wind'.
Not a total return to form but still a worthwhile entry in the Holland cannon ... Read More:

Elvis' Christmas Album

Elvis' only album of the '50s with no fast tempo rock and roll, and for good reason: it was his first Christmas, so the decibel level had to be lower. He does wail on the incredible blues-rock opener, "Santa Claus Is Back In Town". It's Elvis doin' his thing, driving home the double-entendres. It's been written that this album was banned, and the banners didn't have to go too far into the album to find something...too strong.
"Blue Christmas" is medium-tempo blues-rock, a gem of a tune, featuring a typically great vocal and some genuine Presley low-down blues licks. If there was room back in the day, this could gone into the Top 20.
"Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me" is a nicely syncopated rocker, a soft vocal over a hard beat. It works. The vocal approach is reminiscent of Conway ... Read More:

Solid Air

This is a great record of undefinable trips into blues and folk with a jazz vibe at times.
Great guitar playing, great singing, great songs and an almost mesmerising laid back atmosphere.
Nothing else I have heard by John Martyn touches this.
I love to hear a record where a musician so clearly says "this is my sound, and it isn't like anyone else"
He shies away from the "hey nonny nonny" of Pentangle etc and produces a genre-defying piece of brilliance which could sit equally in the folk or blues camps.

This is great music - it just remains for you to buy it immediately at this bargain price.
