There comes a time in the career of every great group when less is decidedly more and they are better off resting on their laurels and not risking their reputations. Alas, this was advice Queen chose not to heed... which suggests to me that the sad demise of Freddie Mercury may have saved them from further decline. Yes, sacrilege I know but maybe a touch of truth? You decide...
It's not that this collection is abysmal. Worse than that, it's just ordinary, the sort of compilation you damn with faint praise. In the hands of an ordinary combo it would probably be quite acceptable MoR pop/rock, but from Queen it's an inevitable decline from the dizzy heights their finest music. Trouble is, there are few truly memorable melodies ... Read More:

This is the last album of Supertramp's "golden era", it's all downhill from here I'm afraid. Although still an Art Rock band, the group became very big after this album's release due to a number of smash hits taken from it (the Logical Song, Goodbye Stranger, take the long way home and the title track), and apart from the short development section in Gone Hollywood and the extended instrumental section in Child of Vision, there is very little to betray their Prog roots.
The album has a very polished, "big budget" style of production, and the instrumentation is dominated by Supertramp's trademark Wurlitzer electric piano sound - fat and rich. They sometimes use these the way other bands would use synthesizers, as on Child of Vision for example ... Read More:

Another compilation of Straits songs and yet again they get it wrong.Instead of a two-disc anthology concentrating on the bands career (the Eagles 2-disc set is a prime example of what could and should have been) we are given a compilation which mixes Straits material with solo stuff and collaborations with female singers. This is really a mess - lets hope the powers that be listen and get it right in future.

Is this the greatest album of all time? Truthfully, I don't know. At the tender age of 18, I thought so. I had no concept of Van Morrison except for Dexy's great cover of Jackie Wilson Said. So, I got on the train to Chester, because they had Penny Lane Records, and I knew I'd find it there. I bought it together with St. Domininc's Preview, so that if I didn't dig Astral Weeks I'd have the album with JWS on and all would not be lost. From the floating, opening strains of the title track, I was immediately hooked. I had never heard anything so fresh, so free, and I already loved Dylan and The Beatles and - for good measure - Scott Walker, but nothing matched this, until I later discovered the likes of Tim Buckley, Nick Drake, Neil Young, etc. But it has to be said - Nick ... This could be Pentangle's best album - 'Basket of Light' is the only other contender, but this one has much more material on it.
The first disc was recorded live in 1968 and the second is from the studio. The live show is great, with a mix of folk standards, originals and instrumentals showing great dexterity and skill from all involved. Bert Jansch and John Renbourn's version of Mingus' 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' is a standout instrumental tune - very relaxing and melodic. The studio set is a strong album in its own right, with highlights (for me) being the guitar duel of 'In Time', the morality tale 'Sovay' and the grooving 'I've Got A Feeling', which borrows the chord sequence from Miles Davis' 'All Blues'.
This expanded edition is a treat, fleshing out ... Read More:

If you have a casual fondness for The Clash then maybe best not to bother with this.
However, if like me you think The Clash are the greatest band of all time then you simply must own this - ignore the bad reviews you will see!
Sure, there are a few songs on here that you will listen to once or twice and probably never again, but there is an albums worth of around 20 excellent songs on here that any serious Clash fan must own.
If you are just getting into The Clash however, you would be better buying the debut album, give em enough rope and London Calling first - as this could scare you off!

Some Van Morrison albums take some time to get into but this one hits the spot straight from the off. As a long time fan, it is hard to place this album against his impressive back catalogue, will take living with it for awhile but I can't see any Van lovers being disappointed as it includes some great simple Celtic Soul and Blues music, featuring guitar, harp, organ, banjo, fiddle, accordion, sax, etc and some beautiful singing. Lover Come Back is another great love song, Behind The Ritual another mystical atmospheric classic, Keep It Simple something of a manifesto and all the other songs add up to a quality album. Remember, Van knows.

I think that ZZ Top are a very good band and they remain one of my favorite bands of all-time. this is one great collection and they made great blues music in the 1970s and the 1980s. here are my comments about most of the songs. GIMME ALL YOUR LOVING this is a really great song and is my 2nd favorite song on the entire cd. SHARP DRESSED MAN this is pretty great too, but probably my 5th favorite. ROUGH BOY is a ballad that is too slow and too sad for me. TUSH is an excellent blues rocker remains one of my 5 favorites on this album. MY HEAD'S IN MISSISSPII is a blues rocker one of my favorites, PEARL NECKLACE not my fave, IM BAD IM NATHIONWIDE this is pretty good although remains as a 10th favorite or something. I AINT CRAZY ABOUT VIVA LAS VEGAS, DOUBLEBACK is a pretty good hard blues rocking song ... Read More:

GYBR is usually referred to as a classic album and routinely appears on "Greatest Albums Of All Time" lists. The truth is, it is a terrible album that happens to contain a few classic `70s Pop tunes - namely, the title track, "Candle In The Wind", "Harmony" and "Roy Rogers". There are a couple of half-decent album fillers - the melodic "Sweet Painted Lady" and the rather overblown "I've Seen That Movie Too" - but the rest of the album is abysmal: the falsetto caterwauling of "Bennie And The Jets", the annoying lilt of "Danny Bailey", the horrid `50s pastiche of "Your Sister Can't Twist". Some of the other tracks are actually rather unpleasant and leave a bad taste in the mouth. What is more, the album is very poorly produced. A case in point is "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" on which the volume ... Read More:
