An album more famous for it's great single "Kayleigh" than as an album, which is a shame. A fine blend of stylised metal and progressive rock, Marrilion conjure up a sound which is unusual, but strangely listenable. Not as inaccessible as Yes, but a progressive milestone, none-the-less. This album, whilst dark, is incessantly uplifting - the melancholy themes and overtones dissolve into great, strident riffs and solos, and the album seems to regularly take-flight. A deeply creative 'concept' album which takes the listener on a journey of redemption and discovery - a mini-fairytale mixed with some real world emotional strife. I love the way the music evolves from track to track, and the way that the rhythm time-signature changes are achieved. ... Read More:

The group recorded three albums during their three years together, but one (Stampede) was never officially released. A fourth album (Last time around) was assembled from leftover tracks after the group disbanded. Their second original album (Again) is easily the best of the three officially released and several of its tracks are included here. Within a general acoustic rock style, there is plenty of diversity including folk, pop and country influences and this eclectic mix illustrates the clash of styles within the group.
Stephen Stills and Neil Young provided most of the group's song although they never wrote together. Of Stephen's songs, the highlights include For what it's worth (their only major hit - it made the American top ten), Bluebird (about ... Read More:

The highly anticipated follow-up to A Night At The Opera arrived on the shelves in late '76, heralded by the hit Somebody to Love. Queen were flying at the time, and they knew it. After their mega-successful year, they decided to play it safe, much like The Works, and basically did a rehash of their best bits!
The production is completely unrestrained - having lost Roy Thomas Baker to bigger things in the USA, the vocal and guitar overdubs are so over the top - the render themselves not only unimpressive, but pointless and swamping otherwise decent songs into a mire of flash and clever-clever studio technique.
Maximum points tho for Tie Your Mother Down and Teo Torriate - well done Dr May!

For their fourth offering Tull continued with the folk tinged rock, introduced on 'Benefit'. Viewed by many as a concept album, I prefer to class it as split themed, as each side of the original vinyl contained songs that were about a subject rather than building up to tell a story.
Tracks 1 - 6 (side 1) features an even split of electric and acoustic numbers, dealing with destitution and homelessness. Title track 'Aqualung' with it's superb opening riff which immediately grabs your attention, followed by the uptempo 'Cross eyed Mary' provide a lively opening before the acoustic numbers kick in, 'Cheap day return', 'Mother goose' and especially 'Wond'ring aloud' are the best Tull acoustic fayre to date, while 'Up to me' has more than a little humour in evidence. ... Best tracks: "Big Sleep", "Glittering Prize", "Somebody Up There Likes You", "Hunter and the Hunted", "Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel"...the whole album!
New Gold Dream is my favourite ever album and the culmination of everything Simple Minds (and post-punk pop music in general) was heading towards, probably without realising it at the time. After all, this is an album that is lyrically built around the idea of the looking to the future, of possibilities, of dreams, of anticipation, of being on the cusp of greatness, the idea of "belief as a beauty thing". It's an album that was about seeing the peak in the distance and not the experience of actually reaching the summit, yet with hindsight, it really was the band's zenith, precisely because ... There are some albums which just sound soooo much better on vinyl than on CD and this is one of them. Other reviewers have noted the energy of the tracks, which is of course true, but I have two copies of a greatest hits album by Slade (neither being this version but the songs are almost exactly the same!) and whereas the CD sounds lacklustre, the vinyl absolutely BLOWS YOU AWAY! So much warmth, immediacy, you are transported back to Britain in the 70s and it's amazing. Think of seeing the Beatles perform Twist and Shout and you kind of get the picture. Buy a turntable and this album on vinyl and you'll see what I mean. It's the very rawness, energy, lack of sophistication of the songs, which makes vinyl the ideal format.

This superb DVD contains an extensive docmentary on Donovan's career on disc 1 and some extensive extras on disc 2. The documentary is comprehensive and shows what a major figure he was in the sixties. The split screen business that others are mentioning really doesn't bother me. The present day Donovan does seem to have something to prove as far as his achievements are concermed, but this is all part of his amusing charm. Personally I do prefer his early recordings rather than his current mannered style, however there is plenty of footage of these on this set. A must-have purchase.

I wish I could start by giving this album more stars. As far as a Jimi Hendrix 'best of' goes, you can't do much better than this. One disc of his best known tracks and another of live and rarer music. The two sides to Jimi's music, the polished, yet still powerfully raw studio work and the soaring, imaginative and soul lifting live work. Hendrix was innovative and unique in his time and listening to his music you are struck again and again by the fact that he is still unsurpassed. His sound has been emulated (often poorly) but never bettered. 'All along the watchtower' and 'Voodoo Chile' start with full force and slap you in the face, where tracks like 'Angel' and 'Little Wing' lull you into his psychedelic, magical patchwork. His guitar sound and wonderful lyrics have the power to move you ... Read More:

The Story So Far: The Very Best Of Rod Stewart... the title tries to convince us that this is everything we need and that it represents all the best material by Rod up to a certain point... well, it doesn't do that completely, but it is a really good effort. There are a few "MUST HAVE" songs on it, so that works OK. There are a few "WHY THAT ONE" songs as well (I can't stand Waltzing Matilda... surely there was one track better somewhere in the past... well of course we know there was... this is just a record company exec's choice)
The REAL classics are there, like You Wear It Well, Sailing, Maggie May, I Was Only Joking, Killing Of Georgie, and others. There are some really mysterious selections like Helipcopter Girl's duo on Don't Come Around Here and Love Touch which don't even ... Read More:
