As ever, Steely Dan's 'Pretzel Logic' is a monument to tasteful musicianship and superb production. Its strength is its diversity, a journey through the lives of characters that may exist beneath the skyline on the cover. 'Night By Night' is funky, 'Parker's Band' swinging, 'East St Louis' old jazz, the title track blues, all sounds of the city. 'Any Major Dude' offers rare optimism and 'Rikki Don't Lose That Number' a warning. These are highlights. Perhaps, for once, some of the material isn't up to their usual highest standards, notably 'Barrytown' and 'Through With Buzz,' but 'Pretzel Logic' is still worth hearing.

Coming back to this album after many years without hearing it, I'm struck by the complexity of the songs, the wit and emotion of the lyrics and the sheer quality of the musicianship. If anyone tries to tell you that The Who were overrated, play them this album.
Just from the opening song 'The Real Me', you hear the most extraordinary rhythm-section in rock as Moon and Entwistle lock in and syncopate more tightly and intensely than they ever had before, and it's right at the front of the mix! The slicing of Townshend's guitar and Daltrey's raw vocal almost feel like afterthoughts. But everyone is operating at the peak of their ability.
Personally, my favourite song is 'Sea and Sand'. The protagonist is Jimmy, the young ... Read More:

I was looking for somewhere to start to begin my Fleetwood Mac education having vague childhood memories of it from the influence of my parents, and I couldn't have picked a better place to start!
This is a wonderful compliation which covers different eras of Fleetwood Mac's musical development, and with that comes some very different sounds to their music.

This classic album is one of the most popular Beatles albums and certainly marked a change of musical direction for the boys as well as a more mature and "deep" style of music. I've been a Beatles fan for over 20 years now and as I have grown, so has my love and understanding of the music, which has never dated, more than 40 years on. I shall now give a brief runthrough of the album, track by track.
1. Drive My Car - one of the Beatles songs everyone knows. Cheerful with a really funky guitar. Easy to listen to, catchy, perfect pop sound.
2. Norwegian Wood - another very well known Beatles song. I love the sitar in it, and this was the beginning of George Harrison's life-long love affair with India, it's music, religion and ... Read More:

My favourite bands of all time are Led Zep, Thin Lizzy, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Sabbath, Rush and Metallica. But, Desert Island Discs style, if I had to choose only one CD it would be by none of these - it would be Wishbone Ash's Argus. It is a true masterpiece and still gets played regularly especially in the car where I can turn it up and just immerse myself in the sublime and magical dual guitar work and harmony vocals, ably supported by a great rhythm section.
I remember being about 15 (c.1982) when my mates and I were so hungry to hear all the great music out there and were amazed by some of the "new" discoveries we made. It was a particularly good afternoon when one of us borrowed from someone's brother Argus (and Boston - another fantastic CD). ... Read More:

This is great! There is not ONE song that isn't worth five stars. I have loved Van Morrison's music since the 60's & this compilation shows just how great a writer & performer he is. He might be a bit of a miserable sod most of the time, but I wasn't inviting him for dinner so that isn't a problem. Add this to your CD collection. You will love it.

The peaks of this third album soar higher than anything before or since from Roxy: Mother of Pearl,Song for Europe, Sunset, Just for You. But there is no getting away from the weaknesses, and this is the first Roxy album which showed the feet of clay which would stomp so ploddingly on later albums like Manifesto.
It is a crossroads album; Eno had left, and Ferry was now the tuxedo-wearing crooner of "Another Time, Another place".
The beautiful lyrics and perfect playing remained; but the humour and the fun had gone from Roxy. From now on, songs like "Psalm" would re-appear on each album which Ferry produced;as if he had to tackle serious themes to be taken as a serious artist.
The creative tension which existed between the two Bry/ians on the first albums had ... Read More:

I've never been one for the jazz themed white noise thrashouts so beloved of Mr Pierce, but always loved the droney cathedral rock of his earlier days (which I appreciate is just as unmusical to some ears - I absolutely love Pure Phase). Ladies and Gentlemen is undoubtedly his masterpiece (jazz themed white noise thrashouts notwithstanding), but why oh why did I not buy a second copy and keep the first fresh in its pill box?
Anyway, post L&G the work declined. Some decent stuff on Let it come down, but I didn't bother with Amazing Grace. This is a return to form. I agree wholeheartedly with the reviewer who said he might need a bit more inspiration when it comes to song titles, but the songs and music are back. I cannot stop listening to Death Take Your Fiddle and Baby ... Read More:

This isn't just my favourite Floyd album but my favourite album of all time. If it was vinyl I would have worn it out years ago. I don't even know who Roger Waters is/was and his presence could not have improved this superb CD.
Sure, old Floyd stuff is good but this is their best.
