Bach - Christmas Oratorio

Since buying this recording some months ago I have played it to death. Whilst not sharing the religious faith which drove Bach to produce it I find it intensely uplifting and joyous. Partly the way Bach did it, partly the way this ensemble reproduces it. I know nothing about the technicalities of what goes into producing such a brilliant sound, but this recording just sparkles. The final chorale "Nun seid ihr wohl gerochen" is simply sublime. Bach got particularly good value out of this tune - heard in various other guises in his work ("O sacred head sore wounded) but who cares? Doesn't do to think too hard about the sentiments either ("now are thou all avenged") but as the recording is in German most of us won't have to do so.

The other reviews here show that this is obviously a Marmite set - you either love it or you hate it. Me, I love it I treasure it and play it often. In such circumstances another review may not be of that much help to an undecided prospective purchaser because you can't know in advance whose taste you share, but for what it's worth:

The treasure of this set for me is the B Minor Mass. It has been described as the greatest work of art in any medium ever and while that may be a rather overblown claim it isn't wholly indefensible. When this album hit the shops Pres.Kennedy had just been assasinated.As no one felt like celebrating-so they say-the album was a total flop and warehouses all over the country had 1000s of returned copies.
Understandably Spector was annoyed after all that work!
Probably the fact that the Singing Nun represented that years Christmas hit!
In 1964 the British Invasion which gave a boost to his career as the Ronettes toured the U K and the man came here to nob with the Stones and his British answer Andrew Loog Oldham who would prove beneficial.
