There are few occasions these days where music will take your emotions to the depths of despair and up to the highest cloud and back before the album is finished. Mostly this happens in film soundtracks and Hannibal is easily one of the finest. There is humour, sadness, heart-pounding atmosphere and some pieces that will make your heart sing and sent your soul alight as the finest music does, and should. The highlight of the album is Vide cor Meum by Patrick Cassidy - the album is worth buying for this alone. When I first watched the film I became determined to discover which great opera that piece was from, not realising that it was written specially for the film. Rarely will you find a piece of music that makes you want to simply sit ... Read More:

This is definitely one of my favourite GG Edition CDs. As with all of his Bach recordings, I'm struck by the brilliant mind of Glenn Gould, listening to the amazing clarity and freedom of his playing which makes this wonderfully complex music sound as if coming directly from his mind. What a shame he did not record complete piano version of the work! Highly recommendable not just to fans, but anyone who loves Art of Fugue, alongside koroliov's enthralling complete recording.

This album is made up of very good quality, and powerful, music. I cannot fault the performances, or the production for that matter.
The problem occurs, that if like me, your cd player is not remote controlled, then throughout the entire album you will be up and down up and down of your seat to ajust the volume (even during the same song, never mind for each one individually).
The above ^ will apply to all of you, unless you have no neighbours whatsoever within a mile or so of you and volume is no consideration.
I have never ever, in 30 years, known a music album with such a massive variance of volume level. Ever ! And that unfortunately, ruins the experience.

This beautiful CD follows a similar trajectory to the treatment of 'Psalm 23' by Howard Goodall (the Vicar Of Dibley theme) and re-invents the tradition of church music. John Rutter is an English genius who can rightly follow in the hallowed footsteps of greats like Ralph Vaughn Williams and John Ireland. These composers know how to make music that is warm, strangely familiar and above all human, without 'arty' pretensions or ideals, this kind music can speak to everyone on a basic level. Old and Young alike.
Peerless performances from the choir and immaculate orchestral arrangements make this one of the most value for money recordings you'll buy, i also guarantee you will not be able to stop playing this music.
Listen to 'What Sweeter Music' ... Read More:
Most, if not all, of these recordings have been released previously by EMI, while some of them - notably the 1965 Elgar Cello Concerto - have proved so popular that they have been continuously available since their initial release.
Despite the inevitable duplication - du Pre fans will almost certainly already have the Elgar and Haydn concertos - this is undoubtedly the definitive Jacqueline du Pre collection, providing 17 CDs of cello works by a huge array of composers from baroque (Bach and Handel) to Beethoven and the romantics and modernists such as Chopin & Bruch. There are no fewer than 25 different composers represented.
The set really does demonstrate the versatility of the cellist, with so many works which have been ... Read More:

Not many conductors match Adrian Boult's masterly performances of V-Williams music, for its rich tonal colours, noble poise and eloquence. Definitely a must-buy CD for anyone who loves VW's music!

I bought this a couple of years ago and return to it regularly - a sure sign of a good recording. I like the music of Vaughan Williams and this is a good example of his music. The Fantasia was a big surprise - its a lovely setting of some well known carols. John Barrow has a superb baritone voice. The Hodie takes a little more getting into but it is worth the effort. Both choirs and orchestra have good sounds. At this price you can't go wrong!

This album remains one of the best, Anything but dull, real joy in worship with many favourites. I love this style of music and it does justice to the wonder of God's mighty works.
Great when you have friends round or just listening in the car or at home.
Wonderfully inspirational tracks.
