The Mollusc by Ween hits me as quite an absurd album, an odd mash of styles at points sounding rather silly and weird, the only real link between many of the songs being a recurring theme of the sea.
The album opens up with the plinky piano of 'I'm dancing in the show tonight' with all the vocals completely warped, from child's voices to a low rumble.
This them morphs into 'The Mollusc' a slower paced acoustic and synthy track of a tale of finding a mollusc in the sand ('Hey little boy, what you got there, kind sir it's a mollusc I found') a very nice relaxing track, only with the rather strange lyrics
There are also songs like 'I'll be your jonny on the spot', much more guitar based, but still with just as odd ... Read More:

We need more folks like Dr Demento! For non -US readers Dr D presents a radio show showcasing what used to be called "novelty records" and it was while chasing one of these round the Net (I want a Hippopotamus" by Gayla Peevey if you must know) I came upon this collection. And WHAT a collection. From Spike Jones' "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth" (lisped thuperbly by George Rock) to the Spectoresque "Christmas at Ground Zero" by Wierd Al there is stuff here that most radio shows won't dare broadcast now. Buy it! even if only for "I'm gettin' nuttin' for Christmas" by Stan Freburg ("Had a good season? Excellent!") In a world of dreary political correctness and dull rhythmic conformity this CD will ... Taken from live concerts shortly before Zappa's last touring band broke up in acrimony, this double CD features playing which can only be described as stupendous. The band are all hugely talented, the arrangements and the playing are as tight as can be, it mixes Zappa's compositions - both "classical" and rock - with snatches of Stravinsky and other composers, and on top of all that there are some extraordinarily fine guitar solos by FZ (City of Tiny Lites and Cruisin' for Burgers in particular).
Since I bought this several years ago, it has rarely been unplayed for long - there's just so much in it to marvel at (and regret that the band broke up prematurely and put Frank off touring ever again). Essential.

Without a doubt this is the greatest Live Rock band ever. Alex and the boys kept me sane during my teenage years in Glasgow. This recording shows them at their peak. It's a pity we have had to wait 28 years for it to be released. However this is one band that's music cannot be classified or shoved into a time frame. Listening to it now, it could have been recorded just last night. Missing from the track listing above is 'The Boston Tea Party', which is sandwiched between 'Vambo' and 'Dance to your Daddy'. 'Framed', which along with 'Faith Healer' were SAHB anthems, has on this recording got Alex playing Hitler. If you are offended then you havn't heard it. Alex was Sensational and the band still are.

You cannot merely sit and listen to this one, it requires work and extensive research. There is so much bubbling under the surface in both the music and lyrics - consider the use of the blue light in conjuntion with the story of the galoot update - it repays servitude.

Anybody reading this knows who The Fugs are and most likely owns their first two albums already on CD (or LP). It certainly was a nice idea to release more unreleased material, which is featured on Disc 3 and Disc 4, but what's the story on reissuing The Fugs First Album and the self-titled, second album, The Fugs, as Disc 1 and Disc 2? Paying big money like this for a boxed set that features 2 already released CDs is not a great bargain.
And after reading the liner notes, it becomes obvious it didn't have to be this way. Ed Sanders writes that he listened to hundreds of hours of unreleased material to gather material for this set. It is very surprising that out of at least 4 days worth of music, another 2 discs could not have been garnered from such ... Read More:
