This CD is not office-safe. After chucking through the first few tracks, and getting annoyed glances from my colleagues, I finally cracked after the opening of "Down by the riverside" and had leave the office where I exploded into fits of laughter in the fire exit. Absolutely hilarious.

Back in 1968 I and a couple of friends were competing to bring home the weirdest records by the strangest, hairiest and most subversive bands we could find. We came up with the Mothers of Invention, Van Dyke Parks, Silver Apples and a whole lot of others, but way up there on the higher register of the weirdness scale were the Fugs, particularly with their LPs "Tenderness Junction" and "It Crawled into My Hand, Honest".

The Fug's earliest records from 1965 onwards were raw proto-punk folk rants with a distinct underground anti-establishment slant. They broke the F-word barrier on vinyl long before Frank Zappa. The other reviews of this wonderful record concentrate on the songs which are indeed very good, with vulgar lyrics and great melodies which you will be humming for evermore.

However, there is so much more to enjoy as well. For starters, the album contains guitar playing up there with Zappa's best; Rat Tomago and The Sheik Yerbouti Tango are superb guitar solos and the magnificent twelve minutes that is Yo' Mama builds and soars to a massive climax, (sorry, there is no other way to describe it), accompanied by Tommy Mars only slightly overblown keyboards.

Some of the vocal and musical arrangements are stunning too. Apart from Yo' Mama, Bobby Brown, Dancin' Fool, Jewish Princess and the oft overlooked Wild Love are sooo ... Read More:

12 Golden Country Greats

This amazing and amusing album was recorded in country territory with the help of genuine country musicians. Great tunes and authentic playing make for an enjoyable listening experience, until one listens closely to the lyrics. Well, the words might put some people off but I found this marriage if the country ethos with post-modern crudeness and explicit expression quite different and refreshing. My favourites are the moving and hilarious I'm Holding You and the politically incorrect Mr Richard Smoker. The lyrics are impressively clever and witty despite their obvious vulgarity and the melodies very catchy and hummable. I'm not sure traditional country fans will like this, but I think it is original and hilarious at times. Ween are the masters of many styles ... Read More:

my brother had this lp in the 70's and I recorded it in the 80's but lost the tape over time.
I was very pleased to see this available on cd so I ended up buying 2 copies.
one for me and one for a mate - we used to listen to it quite a bit and he was thrilled to get it as a gift.

the cd itself has the guys on top form and some of the funniest sketches they did are right here.
Up His Nose and Pedro and Man at the Drive-Inn are superb from start to finish.
