The swift single-album follow-up to Freak Out, setting the pace for FZ releases which has barely faltered to this day (the latest being the long-awaited "Trance-Fusion", released in October 2006), almost thirteen years after his death. More difficult to define than its predecessor, Absolutely Free is a curious mix of short "teen" vocal numbers touching on subjects ranging from high-school sensibilities to the commercialisation of Christmas, alongside several extended pieces of improvisation. It kicks off with the brilliant Plastic People, a spiteful put-down of an apathetic and robotic public-at-large. It's a shame no punk band ever covered that song. A Sex Pistols version would have been very interesting. Then we have the "Duke" trilogy, ... Read More:

This was one of the first Zappa albums I ever heard, and the 25-minute epic of billy the mountain’s journey across America (paid for by the postcard royalties he finally picks up) is still hilarious. Childish, silly, immature, too, but with a sharp edge that (as usual) Zappa works under the bland, accepting façade of everyday American life. He then yanks the blade up, baring the stupidity, smugness, hypocrisy and slavishness of much of late sixties-early seventies American society.
Zappa was completely against the use of drugs, yet this silly masterpiece is highly addictive. Just another Zappa paradox. If “Tommy” was a “rock opera”, this is mock opera of the highest quality. Do yerself a favah an buy it TODAAAAAAAY!

This was the first Volaire album I bought and I think that it was one of the best decisions I've made, it's a very original album. He's a funny and talented man. More people should discover him, if you are struggling about whether or not to buy it, just go ahead and do it!

In reality the First album with a bit of Virgin Fugs and a few odd other bits thrown in. Always essential but a real shame that the rest of Virgin Fugs is missing, so minus a star for that. Both albums plus the extras in the one CD set would have been a better idea.

This is the best thing I ever bought. Full stop. I listen to it over and over again. Pryor is not only very funny. His comedy is very insightful. Helping you understand humanity in all its funny and ugly faces. The humour is painfully funny and accurate. As a manic depressive Pryor is a life saver. When the whole world is crumbling around you, Put pryor on, kick back and laugh at life. You won't feel so bad after all.

OK, I'm not going to bore you with what I think is good and bad about this album, it's great. But for a change, I thought that I'd rate each song instead of the entire album as a whole. So here goes...
Down On Haley - **** - Great opener, quite forgettable.
Golf Shirt - ***** - Blistering song, real rockin' action going on here, and as a bassist, amazin'!
Sorry - ***** - Great lyrics, cool story, amazing song.
Easy Mark - **** - The annoying voice thing on the chorus is something else, otherwise, great song. Had to be re-recorded for Arista.
Van Halen - ***** - The bands' most memorable song, great bass, and a choruse that doesn't sound that good when reading the lyrics, but hearing it... Hey!

A Pulse compilation, but these are the original 78 recordings (mostly HMV?) which my grandad possessed many of when I was young.
Very entertaining even though rather "corny" these days. Should imagine they were rather risque when first heard (similar to Geoge Formby records I suppose).
The last two tracks are duets with Lonnie Donegan which I assume are quite collectable.

Let's be plain about this, if you don't know the music of Frank Zappa but are somehow intrigued and want to know more, you should start with 'Apostrophe' or maybe 'Hot Rats'.
If however, you know a little Zappa and want to find out about his roots then here's a good place to start. This album is quite different from all the stuff that came after. The reason for this is that there's some pretty personal stuff on here. On subsequent releases he developed a sort of highly articulate barrier based on a number of techniques. In matters of a personal nature he later directed his attentions to other groups of people and manufactured the kind of 'Frank' he wanted people to see. In short, after this album he was totally in control. He was the 'Central Scrutiniser'. ... Read More:
