This is a wonderful CD - buy it if you haven't heard Zappa before - it's a great start and a good insight into his work during the 70's. However it's not his "best", even of that period - rather a safe (by Frank's standards) selection of his shorter, more conventional material from a number of albums, including 3 tracks from Overnite Sensation and 2 from Aprostrophe. The tracks feature many of FZ's famous satirical pastiches of a variety of rock genres with his zany, irreverent and rude lyrics, liberal political viewpoints and a lot of blistering guitar solos. Musical highlights are Peaches en Regalia (instrumental), Dirty Love, Yellow Snow, San Ber'dino, Montana, Muffin Man and Cosmik Debris but the hilarious Bobby Brown and Moon Zappa's Valley ... At last, quality reissues of all the Bonzos' albums - it's hard to believe that the only one previously issued separately on CD was Gorilla. The Cornology box valiantly collected (nearly) all the previously available material into one place but these reissues are the real deal - superbly remastered and packaged, augmented with bonus tracks that are worth listening to more than twice, and featuring extremely droll sleeve notes by surviving joint chief Bonzo Neil Innes.
Doughnut was the second Bonzos album, and the first on which they sank their razor sharp parodic teeth into rock music in a big way - while it is extremely diverse stylistically, the music hall and novelty dance band covers and trad jazz parodies to be found on the preceding ... Read More:

Memories of childhood come flooding back. A chorus of yums running round the table...come and get it roast leg of insurance salesman. Mud mud glorious mud. A big six wheeler scarlet painted london transport diesel engine 97 horsepower omnibus. The list goes on. A true pleasure and delight in a very old fashioned gentler humour.

The Bonzos started in fine form with this classic, with all the main strands of their act - covers of 20s & 30s novelty tunes, surreal lunacy, merciless parodies of trad jazz and contemporary pop and rock and general musical comedic genius. Standouts are many, including Neil Innes's ... Read More:

This is like one of Allen's best movies from his early (ie funniest) period. The lines are superb, quotable gems that cause a good deal of laughter, and his bizarre scenarios are worth hearing again and again. One of the funniest CDs I own.

Pure brilliance. This will expand your consciousness to new realms. The only minor hiccup on this most amazing of albums is the last track - a poem with the irritating chick whittering on about something. That said, everything else is fantastic.

The real stand out track on this great album for me is "The Old Green Iron Lamp", a truely beautiful and poignant song showing the side of Harding that "Bombers Moon" was to bring even more to the fore.

There was a time when the art of monologue held quite a hallowed place in our culture, as evinced by such names as Gillie Potter, Sandy Powell and Joyce Grenfell. Stanley Holloway was born in East London, but assumed the persona of a northerner, having perfected the accent during the First World War through enlisting in a Yorkshire regiment. Avid has gathered together 35 of his classic monologues, spanning 1930 to 1941, together with dialogue with Sir Laurence Olivier from the soundtrack of the 1947 film "Hamlet", concluding with his two celebrated 1956 recordings as Alfred P Doolittle of the two songs from "My Fair Lady". As is usual with Avid, superb restoration coupled with generous running time has produced a tremendous bargain.

this is an excellent album - it had me laughing out loud and i'm still discovering new funny bits as i listen to it again. obviously the elements song is a must for any science teacher, which is why i bought the cd, but there's much more to it than just that song. the only odd thing is the repeated songs on the second half. but which album should i get next?
