It's amazing how a green puppet with pingpong balls as eyes can always make me cry when I see this movie. The performance of Kermit's nephew as Tiny Tim is exactly that, a performance, a great piece of acting, made by a sock, as moving as anything you could think of. Lots of today actors should learn from Tiny Tim how to act. Or from Michael Caine. This, along with Sleuth and The man who would be king is his best performance ever. And The Great Gonzo as Dickens is surprisingly accurate. Rizzo the rat is also very funny, without spoiling at all the meaning of the story.
As I haven't got the DVD I'm reviewing the video release, and I can give five stars to the film easily. It simply has the magic of Christmas inside. I'm now 31, and Christmas ... Read More:

Since the last Goon has passed away, I have been playing a couple of my favourite cds. And Lo! this is one of them.It has 4 classic shows and includes previously unreleased material. I will pick on three highlights; "I'm walking backwards for christmas" the first time Spike unleashed this comic song to the unsuspecting public. Enter Bluebottle through the pipe. A master of a thousand voices was Peter Sellers. The third one was the John Snagge meeting Eccles, applying for the announcers job. Snagge could not beleive Eccles "was at Cambridge". When he asked Eccles what he was doing at Cambridge; "Buying a tie" came the classic answer. Out of four shows it is not easy picking your favourite bits. Buy this today and pick out ... Read More:

Yes, it is a great life affirming movie with its heart firmly in the right place...BUT...personally I would have prefered not such a happy ending, or a very different kind of happy ending - I just feel that the miraculous turnaround of George's fortunes at the end, while rightly suggesting that all good deeds may be remembered, and returned in kind, missed a real chance to state that happiness didn't have to depend on material wealth at all - After all, when he was given his old life back, George's euphoric happiness was based soley upon his family and friends, regardless of his dire financial state! This was a real chance to bang the point home about the real dangers of capitalism, but it was totally spurned. Indeed, this ending almost suggested, after roundly attacking ... Read More:

A little jewel of a film! This movie was released with not much fanfare in 1983, but has developed a loyal following in the U.S. due to it's repeated airing on cable television. Such is it's cult following, that American cable network TBS regularly hosts a "Christmas Story Marathon" during which the film is shown for 24 hours straight, from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day! I moved to Ireland from America 6 years ago, and have searched in vain for this film to appear on the Christmas schedule of RTE, BBC, Sky or any of the other 500 channels on my system. Sadly "A Christmas Story" is virtually unheard of on this side of the Atlantic, and I soon realised that I would probably never see it again, unless I bought it myself.
