A brave move to set a period film against the backdrop of a very modern soundtrack, but in this case, it works, and very well too.
Fans of the movie will love this soundtrack, but it's also just a great CD, one that should be a staple of any collection. The clever reworkings of so many old hits, El Tango de Roxanne in particular, give a new flavour to the tracks and help to up the kitsch value of the movie. Although it was a huge worldwide hit, it was certainly quirkier than most of your five-star movies, and the soundtrack is exactly the same.
The Elephant Love Medley is a sparkling blend of too many songs to count, but you'll have fun trying to name them all, if you're not too caught up in just how wonderful Ewan McGregor and ... Read More:

The Classic FM `Movie Themes' 3 CD box sets appear on a annual basis. In 2006 we had `Classic FM at the Movies', in 2007 there was the `Sequel' and now we have the 2008 `Ultimate'.
The first and sequel sets were a good choice of music from popular films, the sequel making a particularly good buy because it consisted of tracks from a different selection of films than on the original.
The `Ultimate' title of this latest release implies that it's either the best one or the final one, but in my opinion it's neither. It's not the best for there is a considerable overlap with the music from the previous Classic FM Movie CDs, and it probably won't be the final one of its type thanks to the vast back catalogue of film music ... Many Motown stars recorded Christmas albums and tracks from those albums have been the source of many Motown Christmas compilations. This is one of a pair of British budget compilations that are as good as any I've seen, with an excellent mix of famous and obscure songs and all the singers you expect to hear.
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Temptations and Stevie Wonder are each represented by three tracks. The Jackson five get two tracks. The Four Tops also get two, including one featuring guest vocalist Aretha Franklin. Kim Weston and Marvin Gaye have one song each.
For me, the highlights are Everything for Christmas (Temptations), Little bright star (Diana Ross and the Supremes), Warm little ... Read More:

You could play a fully credible disco night armed with nothing more than these five cds. If a definitive chart was made of the 500 top tunes from the dance decade of 1975-1984 this set would claim an absolute minimum of 50 places.
One ill informed reviewer knocks legenary weekender tunes on CD3 as fillers and bemoans the lack of Abba, Bee Gees and Dexy's Midnight Runners. It's precisely that absence which makes this such a credible set. I already owned perhaps 80 or 90 of these tracks but the purchase was well worth it for Janice Macclain's Smack Dab in the Middle and then again for the huge grin that spread across my face when I heard Wikka Wrap again for the first time in twenty years.
If you have only a few disco tracks in your collection ... Read More:

I suppose that the problem with most compilation albums is that they just won't feature all the tracks that you would like them to. This album is no exception although there are a lot of very good tracks, indeed some of them are absolute classics.
It may come as a surprise to find that there aren't any tracks at all from one of the very biggest groups of the 70s,namely Slade but maybe that is because they wouldn't agree to release their tracks for this CD. Artist's on this CD include David Bowie,Queen,The Hollies and John Lennon so there are many big names featured. I would have preferred a lot more tracks from the period that I actually liked such as 'This Flight Tonight','Silver Machine' and 'Focus' but you can't have everything.
