The DJ's dilemma goes like this: how do you make a seamless mix on the one hand, but at the same time give the listener a distinctive selection, making every tune count? Nightlife 1 was one of the rare cases that somebody hit it on the nail, and installments 2 and 3 were flawed by comparison. I groan inwardly at the discordand clash of When the Sun Goes Down/ Now's the Time on N2, and skip over derivative stuff like Princess Warrior and Babylon Rising on N3. I'm also not a huge fan of the 'max-out the bassline, throw in a vocal' school e.g. Concorde Dawn. I admit the likes of 'Fly Away' destroy the dancefloor, but mix CDs are more about the little bits and pieces lovingly put together like grown-up lego.

Phil Spector Definitive Collection

The only problem with Phil Spector stuff is the production. The singers, especially Darlene Love and Ronnie Spector, are incredible. Likewise the songwriters (Greenwich-Barry, Mann-Weil etc) plus the amazing 'wrecking crew' musicians and the outlandishly obtuse arrangment thought of Jack Niztsche. Quite how someone (Spector) was able to turn the fruit of all this talent into the stewed mush presented here is one of rock 'n' roll's darkest mysteries. Actually no, how he did it was through having no concept of arranging or mixing. So much so that his inability and fear of even the idea of Stereo will become the final nail that slams the coffin door of his 'legend' firmly shut.

What can I say about Volume One of the Nuggets compilation that hasn't already been said, this album after all is still one of the most important purchases I have ever made.

The cheap price tag of this collection on its own is quite frankly daft, but with the array of quality songs from relatively unknown bands being quite literally immense on this compilation, as a starting point you can't really do much better. So in short, you have no excuse, you need to have this compilation in your collection now.

Originally compiled and released in 1972 on the Sire Record label, by Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman with help from Lenny Kaye, Nuggets is a superb gateway to the 1960's Psychedelic and Garage scenes. I play at least 5 songs from ... Read More:

Most of the classical songs are great sung very well by talented singers, but don't expect the original artists from the stage shows as they're not on there. Some of the more modern songs weren't so great and We Will Rock You was played like a fanfare for HRH the Queen, that was a real let down, no hand clapping or headbanging, there are more electric guitars in Phantom!!!

If like orchestras this is for you, if you want songs from original cast members don't bother.

This is probably THE best musical I have ever seen on stage ever (mind you, I haven't seen IDINA in Wicked yet, but I have seen Wicked, so this is saying something...) Loads of my friends didn't get why me and my friend were so in love with it until they saw it on stage. Now they listen to it all the time like we do. If you are open minded, and willing to listen to it all the way through to get the story, you'll get RENT fever too. Its phenomenal. Moo.

This is the 4th Cd I've bought for baby - and about time I got one this appropriate. Fantastically normal - not folky, operatic or weirdly modern - sung by normal voices with a bit of character for each song. Listened to it loads already and still not annoyed in the slightest.

Cool album rammed with soooo many artistes that I love! Pretty much all the big songs of the last two or so years or so but I kind of wish there was more of Jools Holland himself... That aside, the track that stands out above the rest has to be Amy Winehouse's `Tears Dry On their Own'. It's down right brilliant and probably the best recording of her live out there at the moment. Kasabien and White Stripes are also totally cool with `Empire' and `My Doorbell' utterly rocking my face!

Cream 15 Years

Just had my new garden furniture delivered and take great pride in assembling it and putting it on the balcony then standing back and admiring it. I would feel very old and sad even though I'm only 27 would it not be for the fact that I was listening to 15 yrs of Cream whilst doing it and dancing around the flat like a loon. My boyfriend bought me this CD for our 21st month anniversary last week and I strongly suggest to anyone who used to go clubbing from 1999 onwards to get it, its amazing, tune after tune blasting out of my stereo, a real treat. I've played it over 10 times since I've got it and can guarantee I won't be tiring of it.... feel like I'm 19 yrs old all over again!
