The Best Christmas Album In The World ... Ever!

This is a pretty decent stab at a Xmas party album but suffers from the usual faults ie Because the record company behind it can't obtain permission to use all the tracks they might want, you end up with this compromise. Unfortunately in this instance they've made matters worse by substituting inferior versions of some tracks for the real thing(surely no one actually believes "Fairytale of Newyork" is enhanced by Ronan Keating's contributions).

There is a fairly simple solution:Buy this album AND "Chritmas Hits"(a three CD set that can be got pretty cheaply), although there is quite a bit of over-lap, the two discs together should provide all the material you need to put together a tailor-made great xmas party album.

This is of course the sound track to the Hugh Grant/Drew Barrymore romantic comedy Music and Lyrics. If you've seen the film and enjoyed it, you'll love this. It's got all the versions described in the blurb on the Amazon item, and although I inevitably skip all of the quite frankly terrible (but deliberately so, so it's not that bad) Cora Corman songs, I really, really love the ones that involved Hugh Grant.

They include the brilliantly bad 80s records by his character's band Pop, joyous in their accurate send up of the 80s pop scene, bad because they are more schmaltzy than you can imagine. I ordered this album and thought it was the best christmas album I have ever bought. The songs are all so christmassy and really put you in the christmas mood. It is a great collection of varied artists, so it suits everyone's style of music. Favourites of mine are the beautiful "silver bells", the pretender's version of "merry little christmas" which is delightful, and mariah carey's belting powerful version of "o holy night" that sounds like she has desended from heaven. Buy it and feel 100% christmassy.

Tower Of Song - The Songs Of Leonard Cohen

I love this album.The highlights are Don Henley's take on 'everybody knows' which is biting and cold, Martin Gore's 'coming back to you', rich but still imbued with the pain of emptiness (miles better than Tricia Yarwood's version)and Tori Amos's 'famous blue raincoat', she is perfect for the song. The rest is still good but I am not entirely convinced by Billy Joel, I think he lacks the necessary depth and Peter Gabriel's effort is a bit sluggish.
Have to disagree with the others, I think Bono's take on Hallelujah is interesting and I like it. However, the ultimate cover has to be John Cale's which is avaiable on the album 'I'm your fan - the songs of Leonard Cohen by....' If you like Leonard Cohen you should definitely invest in this one too.
