It's a real grower, this album. When I first listened to it, I couldn't see what the fuss was about, really. It sounded just like another chill-out CD, albeit better than the others. But after repeated listens, I started to appreciate how accomplished it was. The mix is so seamless that you can't work out where one track stops and another begins. Basically, if this is a chill-out CD, then it pretty much redefines the whole genre. This is not about loosely stringing together some nice tunes; this is about sounds, tempo, and rhythm. This is an excellent CD. It seems to be a milestone (#45) of some sort, the front cover design, 45 tracks (the most for a 'now' I think). Well, the CD itself. CD1 starts off very well. Gabrielle's Rise, Mel C and Left Eye's Never Be The Same Again, along with Craig David's genius creation Fill Me In were all in the Top 10 bestsellers of the year so far. All the tracks on this side are brilliant. CD2 then. Some massive dance hits, a few RnB anthems jutted in there (including the great Thong Song by Sisqo). The Fragma and Sisqo tracks keep it fresh for time. (These were top 5 the day it came out.) Also, for the first time, some garage, Artful Dodger and Craig David appear twice! Chart hits are the order of the day once again as Now reaches no. 59 with a promise of 43 top chart hits, hmm well, Intenso Project is a rather debatable choice but as the single was released after NTWICM 59 (and im in a charitable mood) i shall give it the benefit of the doubt - music can be an acquired taste sometimes.
CD1 brings us no.1 from the likes of Natasha Bedingfield, Eric Prydz with Call On Me (and no, the cd does NOT come included with the music video), Robbie Williams and (shudder) Busted and Mcfly with Thunderbirds Are Go and Obviously respectively. Just leave out the rancid Darius, V, Ronan Keating, Rachel Stevens and the unforgivable album closer from Duncan and Keedie and you're onto a winner, here. The Now collection of CD compilations has set a trend. We see, now more then ever, lots of different compilation cd's, all for different sort of things. But, even with so much competition, the Now series remain on top. Past albums remain a great way of getting back in touch and reminiscing over old songs and thinking "oh my god, I remember this..." and Now 40 is great for doing this.

It contains lots of old tunes that you can giggle about listening to years ago, laugh about, and remember with an odd sense of pride (or more likely embarrassment!) that you knew all the words to them.
