From the carefree, sunshiny days of the palm court orchestras comes to us the music of one André Rieu, a Dutch violinist who long, long ago vacated his position as concertmaster in one of Holland's provincial symphony orchestras. Not because they played bad music, but because they refused to play down to the masses. Since they were subsidized, who cared that the halls were at best half full most of the time? Ah, yes, André cared! He no longer wanted to play to halls half-filled with toffee-nosed musical connoisseurs. So, André decided to become a Stehgeiger and Kapellmeister all in one and to elevate the masses through bringing to them the music they would probably understand without too much intellectual effort. This did not quite work out ... Read More:

I bought this CD for my husband - we had heard one or two pieces on ClassicFM and really liked them. The double CD had maybe 2 or 3 tracks which I actually enjoyed... and didn't have to fast-forward. I found some compositions monotonous and some of the voices unrefined and it certainly wasn't the style or standard I expected.
I'm not normally the sort of person who would give a bad review, my mistake I guess in that I didn't listen before buying.

This CD is certainly a popular one, thanks in no small part to Bryan Adams' hit song. Kamen's CD releases are notoriously lazy and bare but when I listened to the first few tracks, I was pleasantly surprised. The first quarter of the movie is presented quite satisfactorily (tracks 1-3) and is the best section of the CD. His theme tune for Robin of Locksley is an exciting piece, updating the Prince of Thieves for a new generation of cinema goers and his fondness for Mario Nascimbene's 'The Vikings' shows in Robin's fanfare. This segues directly into the escape from the Crusades then a beautiful piece as Robin returns home, a melancholic theme for Marion and finally an adventurous frolicking in Sherwood, complete with traditional 'twangs'. However, ... Read More:

I must agree that this is in my opinion my favourite compilation of Vangelis's music. This is the one I play most, then followed closely by Gift.
With Vangelis's Best Of and compilations growing almost daily, you can not go wrong with this. What makes it really good and different is that you have Memories Of Green from the elusive See You Later cd.
Overall this CD is a very good selection and has a nice flow to it, slip it on and relax. Don't worry you have 13 tracks before the Chariots of Fire theme. By that time you will have reached a chill factor of let it all play man, all is great with the world and you can spare 3 minutes 31 seconds of your life, and listen to it again like I just did.

My eyes lit up in March of this year when I discovered this CD was to be reissued."Tracks from Morricone's late 60's/early 70's psychedelic experimental period" said the review I was perusing."An essential purchase" it continued."Mmm-hmm" thought I.
It has to be said I am rather fond of Morricone.I find much of his music to be absolutely captivating, capable of simultaneously putting a smile on my face then reducing me to tears.I also find the effect of his music does not wear thin after repeated listens. I have been listening to "Once Upon a Time in America" for five years and it still sends shivers down my spine. Even The Beatles are not capable of this.
Goosebumps on the arms;tears in the eyes;alleviation of depression;a sense of ... Read More:

A suprisingly lush, romatic score from Nyman with a pleasingly pastoral harmony and minimal repetition. This will appeal to fans of 'The Piano', but will do little for afficianados of Nyman's classical minimalsit scores with Peter Greenaway in the '80s. Moving and evocative though this is, I still year for the more austere Nyman.

A mediocre film and a great soundtrack. Vangelis shows here his usual skills to create a mixture of heroism and intimism, and the result works very well. Maybe it does not reach the heights of 1492 or Bladerunner, but it approaches them.
