Please ignore the review below - the gentleman quite clearly has cloth in his ears. This is a splendid collection of "artificial" piano concertos from the golden age of cinema, the best known being the Warsaw Concerto. Philip Fowke is admirably partnered by his Irish conductor and orchestra and they give these slight but gorgeous scores their all. In particular, the Warsaw Concerto comes off splendidly well in EXCELLENT SOUND. Richard Rodney Bennett's waltz from Murder on the Orient Express is another winner. This is a super selection if you have a taste for romantic piano concertos. Great stuff.

Being a student of composing for film and tv, I was looking forward to hearing Bernard Herrmann's unadulterated, original music for the great film Taxi Driver. Unfortunately the original release on CD from Arista consists of 10 tracks, the first 5 of which are pointless jazz funk workouts of Hermann's themes by session musos, arranged by Dave Blume. Track 6 is a collage of Travis Bickle soundbites over a pasted together backing track. It's not until you get to track 7 that the original music is heard, conducted by Herrmann. This is the real thing - exquisitely composed and orchestrated, this is film music of the highest calibre, but the total minutes of this actual soundtrack material add up to 9.55! Ry Cooder has many influences - from the early days as part of Taj Mahal's backing group (Ryland P Cooder, Rhythm Guitar) to the global success of Buena Vista Social Club. This collection pre-dates the latter and post-dates the former - a rather strange bracketing, that has more to do with label allegiance than completeness.

Nontheless, if you know Ryland only as a musical archaeologist, this is a great introduction to his enormous talent. Missing (in my view), are some great songs, such as 634-5789 and Across the Borderline - not to mention the classic Coast of Malabar (with the Chieftains). having only recently becoming aware of Taj's existance it makes me wonderwhere i would be without him. Gutter, whiskey, trolley full of old cansand shopping bags.... Only joking. Ha Ha.
Anyway, It's a solid album,beautiful little sounds and guitar riffs.
